Re: Euthanasia Methods

All of the rats I've had euthanised are injected straight into the heart. My vets puts them under first. Admittedly, it was not something I'd ever thought about (all I knew was that they were put under anaesthetic before the injection), it was only when I had a hairless girl pts that I noticed the w...

Lychee (with skin)?

Is this ok for rats? Bought 4 boxes of them for less than a pound as they were reduced in Tesco. They're vile  The skin is hard, so I can't imagine the rats would try to eat the skin anyway, but is the flesh ok for them? There is a big seed in there also, but we'd give them in free range, so w...

Re: So WORRIED! HELP!!

Try scatter feeding. It will help solve the issue as Rogue then won't be able to horde all of the food. It will make meal times more engaging for them and will help prevent selective feeding.

Re: Apparently healthy young rat has just dropped dead

Very sad :( I've had this happen once before. We had Axel out of the cage about 3 hours previous to that. He was in the bedroom, jumped off the bed and ran back to his cage (he'd always do this when he decided it was time to go back!). I then went for a nap, woke up and he was gone. He was rock hard...

Re: Leaving rats alone?

I left my rats alone a couple of years back for a day and a half over the Xmas period. I bought some extra water bottles and scatter fed about 3 days worth of food just to be sure. They were fine.

Re: should i get a nebulizer?

We have this one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Omron-CompAir-NE-C28P-Compressor-Nebuliser/dp/B0081EL4OS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1445431184&sr=8-1&keywords=nebuliser The problem is, is that a rat is never going to allow you to put the child mask over their nose/mouth (it literally blows a mist into their f...

Re: What happened to Jeremy? Choking?

I was meant to say now completely normal and not not! The reason I don't think it was a seizure is because it was more like he was gasping for air, he was lifting his head up whilst gasping. The only thing I can compare it to is that it sometimes happens when rats are about to die, but it was much m...

What happened to Jeremy? Choking?

Hi all, so on Sat morning something odd happened to Jeremy. I was on the phone and noticed he ran from a hammock at the top of the upper cage of an SRS to the floor of the bottom cage in the SRS, probably faster than I've ever seen any rat move! He then began to jump up and down for a 20 seconds or ...

Re: Chipping

Never had any of my rats or degu chipped. When I got my first 2 rats, I did look at Exotics Direct for insurance (in the end, I decided against insurance, of course!) and they offered a discount if your pet was microchipped. So I guess people who buy insurance for their rats may get them chipped for...

Re: Food Help for my plump rats!

cyber ratty wrote:#7 isn't kidney friendly, so I would switch to #11 (#8 is kidney friendly but has pasta in, so not suitable for tubby rats).
RR are good at removing items in mixes, so if you wanted #8 you could ask for the pasta to be removed and then replace it with something else at home.

Re: Bitten (?) eye?

No wait! Don't give him metacam! I'm pretty sure both those AB eye drops contain steroids. It's too early for me  Maxitrol has a steroid, but Isathal doesn't. I'll probably go with the isathal, because trying to get the maxitrol drop into his eye proved troublesome today (trying to squirt a d...

Bitten (?) eye?

Hi all, so! One of the babies has hurt himself (no name yet!). I think it may be a bite, as his eye looked like it had a "dint" in it (I wouldn't say a hole, as it really just looked like a dint!). It looks exactly like when I had an older man who stopped blinking as much, so his eye began to "dry" ...

Re: Bulletin about FR on Social Media

OK, So, I don't mean to sound argumentative - it would be nice to get the forum as active as it was a few years back. So this is more bouncing ideas off you to think about, maybe: Why would someone join a page for a forum they aren't a member of when they can go to a group and get advice within minu...
