Re: What is wrong with Chippin?
Thanks Amy. I guess I'm just going to have to see what the vet says. My good rat vet is away being a new mum at the moment so I'm panicking a bit!

What is wrong with Chippin?
Over the last few days I have noticed that Chippin is not himself. He's been a bit fluffed up and walking with a hunched posture. Normally I have some sort of idea about what is wrong with my rats, but this time I have no idea what it could be. He is still eating/drinking/grooming but his ears look ...

Re: Male rats and lumps?
I had a boy with a tumour by his back leg. As he was old and had HLD I let it grow. It got massive and couldn't have been removed even if we'd wanted to put him through an op as it was wrapped round his bones. I'd get it checked out because if it can be removed you won't want to leave it too long!

He's been given Baytril and Flagyl, I've not heard of Flagyl before! Apparently it's other name is Metronidazole, has anyone else any experience using it? ETA: Found it on the rat health guide, apparently used in "Used in bone infections, infections of the tooth socket and abscesses where anaerobic...

Re: What is wrong with Cabbage's eye?
I did get a video but couldn't upload it because I was about to go away for my birthday weekend. I left Cabbage and another wobbly, tilty old man with a friend over the weekend. I got back yesterday and was extremely relieved to see that Cabbage was almost back to normal :) The ABs kicked in and he ...

What is wrong with Cabbage's eye?
Last night I noticed that Cabbage was acting strangely. He was in his little house at the back of the cage and it looked a bit like he was choking, but when I looked closer I realised that he wasn't. He was moving his head up and down in a strange manner. I picked him up and noticed crusty porphyrin...

Re: Is it right to PTS out of guilt?
I think the ethics of PTS are too prevalent in this topic. These can be discussed elsewhere. This is a terrible decision for batty_rat to make, and it is between her and Hekla to make a decision based on our support. I'm not going to point out who is right and who is wrong, that will depend on your...

Re: Is it right to PTS out of guilt?
It's hard to make a judgement about something so serious from a photo and I know that Krystal and Roddy wouldn't let him go on if he was suffering. Krystal was there to help me make a judgement about Croque Monster and I totally trusted and valued the comments that she gave me. I know that she'll kn...

Re: PT, later stages advice, Sleeping in open?
My boy Heathcliff had a PT and used to sleep out in the open too. I did find it strange... I gave him steroids and galastop and he went on for two more months :) I even found him in a high hammock on a number of occasions! I did have another boy with a PT but nothing helped him and he went downhill ...

Re: Caring for a PT
I always cry at the vet! Always! I just can't help myself. I wish my grief didn't come out that way but there's nothing you can do about it. The vets must be used to it! The receptionist gave me a hug when Bandit was put to sleep.

Re: Caring for a PT
Thanks for your responses. I'm utterly wretched about this but I think you're right- better let him go too early than too late. It's awful- by the time I now for sure its time for him to go, he'll already be suffering, so I have to let him go while he's still a bit ok, but if he's still a bit ok, t...
