Re: Rat with weak hind quarters

It may have not been the completely right thing to do, but with our horde once they got a certain age (over 18 months) or started to show signs of degeneration we started supplementing with the following: Senior aid - Loads of goodies, amino acids, vitamins, C&G Linseed oil - Keep them supple (joint...

Re: Not eating very much PT/stroke or depression??

Thank you both, the vet confirmed slight right side weakness and continue with steroids, galastrop and ABs.

But to try lots of different foods with him, last night he was on peanut butter which he had a fair amount of (water down, always scared of the choking hazard) and this morning choco porridge.

Re: Not eating very much PT/stroke or depression??

Thank you Mulberry. The sad thing is all his litter mates have died young :( Travis came to me as a trio, Spencer died under a year with a suspected heart attack, harry a PT under 2 and now Travis is ill, so under 2. We are at the vets soon, he is eating bits and pieces but just seems to turn his no...

Not eating very much PT/stroke or depression??

Hi, recently we lost the last of our two remaining ratties, Harry sadly left us about a week ago from a PT. A week after the loss Travis started circling, so we started him on Dex and galastrop, the circling has got a lot better, he did have right side weakness. The issue is now, he is not very inte...

Re: Nebuliser for rats with chronic resp problems

The only issue I have with it, and why I very rarely use mine is that the rats can panic badly, and the stress of panicking can cause more problems than the nebuliser solves (using something cat carrier sized, and putting a friend in helps - although obviously you can only put a freind in if nebuli...

Re: worried about pts too soon.

Its a very fine line I think and only a decision you can make as you know him. I think you also have to give them a fighting chance, so perhaps a little suffering is seen in some instances (of course we use the medication to elevate), if we just pts every time you thought they would not pull through...

Re: House has mouse/mice - safe for rat to be on floor?

If you mean from a physical point of view, a rat vs mouse confrontation usually ends badly for the mouse - rats will quite happily kill and eat them. However, I would tidy up, find where mousey is getting in, and block it, before you let her on the floor - if it's a largish mouse hole, a small rat ...

Re: Steroid injection

Steroids use a lot of energy, but should results in a degree of perkiness / activity post injection otherwise they aren't really working. You will need to supplement with high calorie food to ensure she is getting enough energy for the usual stuff + the effect of the injection. What steroid was used...

Re: Periodic checkups?

Rat's don't need shots unless they require medication.

I take mine every now and again for check ups just to be on the safe side, plus the vet gets to see them in a healthy state.

Re: Healthy pH for rats?

I always find this site good for info http://www.ratbehavior.org/Stats.htm It suggests 7.5-8.5 so neutral - slightly basic. ...I was sure it was the same, that's why they do so much testing on rats really, isn't it? Because of our similarities. Depends on the testing.....but also high up the scale i...

Re: Very old boy, what to do?

There are lots you can do to make older men more comfortable, making snuggle zones etc.....but what you need to do is make life worth living. If he is depressed, and I doubt you are doing this on purpose then his immune system will drop which will not help his situation. So my advise would be to try...
