Re: Post-op Care

Hehe hi Cate, yeah we made the decision to do it last night and just face the consequences if there was to be any tearage, but after a night and day of being in their cage they are much happier still recovering wonderfully :D noticed there is loads less testosterone, no where near as much fighting (...

Post-op Care

Hello, Our little boys recently visited the nad fairy and are a couple of ... things short. The operation was done on Thursday last week and they are still in their little post-op cage. The boys are healing wonderfully and are bright and bubbly and seem a lot closer as brothers. We have kept them in...

Re: What age is an 'old' rat?

Thanks for your responses :) it has made me feel a bit better about my little ones. I think it is difficult to come to terms with a stamp being put down saying that your rat is old at this age but as Kahini said, an average is because it looks at the young deaths and old. I guess I just feel like th...

What age is an 'old' rat?

I was speaking to a local pet rescue centre the other day and was shocked when I was speaking about my rats that they said they were 'golden oldies'. My 5 girlies are 2 years old in September but are showing absolutely no signs of age .. I was actually quite upset at the centre's terminology of my g...

how long does it take for baytril to take effect

As some of you may know, we recently have had a scare with our fluffy, black, rex Marmite, as yesterday morning I noticed she was very clumsy, was falling over and had a head tilt. I went straight to the vets who gave her a steroid injection and some baytril. In your experiences, how long does it ta...

Re: sneezing

What paper litter are you using? After much trial and error we have found that Carefresh or Ecobed is the best for the base of their cage because it smells less and is dust free :) Have you noticed any red discharge around their eyes?

Re: sneezing

Hello! What bedding do you have them on? Do you use litter for their toilet? Rats are very susceptible to sneezing especially if the bedding is very dusty. I also find that my rats sneeze a lot when there is toilet roll in their cage so try to avoid that at the moment.

Re: Bad week this week :(

Thank you :) she is back home now! I had to go back to work but I made sure I saw her eating and she was happy enough and was running around the cage to explore it. I have put her with Marmite and they seemed happy to be together. I was watching Marmite before I had to leave and I noticed that when ...

Re: Bad week this week :(

Thanks for your help :) I'll have a look at the link a little later - nervous it will make me paranoid about her health though! Never really had any problems with health so this is like double wammy on the shock factor for her sickness and Nutmeg's lump. I am glad to hear that your ratties have been...

Bad week this week :(

Nutmeg is going for her op today to get her lump removed (not sure yet what it is) and yesterday morning found that Marmite has a head tilt and was very clumsy and falling on her right side a lot :( seemed to happen over night :( Took Marmite to the vets yesterday to get it looked at and again the v...

Re: removal of lump on Wednesday

Thanks guys for the great advice, I'll certainly take it all on board! Am proud of nutmeg being so good, she isn't known for her patience and didn't seem to take being prodded by a needle and held for a long time too bad. I had visions she would bite the vet!

Fingers crossed all goes well!

removal of lump on Wednesday

For the past three weeks nutmeg has had a small lump on her right side just below her front leg. Went to the vets yesterday who had a poke and a prod and advised that she didn't think it wasn't a cyst (like we had thought). It is only a small lump that looks whitish in colour. We have got nutmeg boo...

Re: Puffy eye

Hi thanks for the reply! she is much better, looks like I was being an overbearing mother again! It seemed to clear up within a day. I think she must have just scratched or something.

Still concerned about the girls behaviour when the go on heat though. Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks!
