Re: Hay too strong smelling - how else can I store it?

In terms of your concerns: No, the gerbils and rats shouldn't be negatively affected by it. The only real reason hay would affect them is if it's low quality stuff where dust or must is an issue. But the smell itself isn't a worry. Hay is the same as any other new smelly thing though - you notice it...

Re: A Different Kind of Introduction!

Lone adult to babies isn't that much of an unusual situation. My recommendation would be the same as with any other aged individuals involved: http://fancyratsforum.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=52 Since PB ate the photos, there's the relevant ones here: https://www.facebook.com/isamurats/posts/1881105...

Re: Which is better Reggie Rat or Burgess Rat Royale?

Just to note, "Reggie Rat" no longer exists; it stopped being produced a few years back and has been replaced by "Reggie Rat & Mimi Mouse". Although there is a duplication of part of the name, it is a different product (trying, badly, to meet the needs of two species with different nutritional requi...

Re: Good ways to serve bones?

The bits most likely to go off are also the tastiest – meat, other soft tissues, marrow – and so they'll be the bits that get eaten first. The only bits that my rats leave are the outer layer of pork rib bones: they like to split ribs in half lengthways and hollow out the middle, leaving the outer ...

What country are you in? Just wondering from your comment saying you can't find any cages online.

Re: Last Meal for My Friends

I usually do something like a triple chocolate chip muffin or similar. If I buy one of the standard 4-packs then there's also spare for me to eat afterwards when feeling really upset.

(Also sorry your first post on FR is regarding something sad)

Re: Rat Fee's

Although there are some insurers who cover rats in their exotics policies, for rats you're much better off just putting aside some money yourself each month.

Re: Euthanasia Methods

That does sound very rushed, and not great in manner at a sensitive time. I've turned up to my current practice a couple of times for an emergency pts (when they've had like one vet on doing small animals and a full appointments list) and at the most the vet has vanished quickly afterwards - but lea...

Re: Euthanasia Methods

It's likely to be the same chemical, but different brands use different colouring (it's whacky coloured to minimise mixup risks). My vets usually use a brand which uses pink colouring. I personally prefer the injection to be given to the heart as it's quicker - sometimes gas anaesthetic can wear off...

Re: Quinoa grain?

They may well ignore it as whole though - they're small and hard and until a rat learns that they're worth the effort they may try and get out of it.

Re: Rats and other pets

Sounds like you've thought about it a lot already :) The only thing I'd add is that if you're thinking of free ranging the rats in the area that the hamster free ranges, is that the hamster may be a little more wary than normal to start with. On account of their smell being in a more directly in con...
