Re: Thinking about getting rats

Well done for asking questions first. But there is soooo much about rats I couldn’t put it in one message. That cage is a good size for a trio of rats, a trio is better than two as they are social animals and better dynamics. It’s good to give rats wheels, at least 15 inches big (silent spinner or t...

Re: Meds For OAP Chest Problems

Oh no, so sorry for your loss. Poor Ollie. I don’t think that the under dosing of meds would have been a contributing factor, there may have been something else going on, like heart problems which are difficult to diagnose.

Re: Hard lump on throat?!

I have just gone through this with Yondu and it was an abscess. The vet tried did a fine needle aspiration to see if there was fluid ie an abscess. There was not, so it was operated on where it turned out to be an abscess but it had gone cheesy  However the lump came back but smaller but more ...

Re: Hi everyone newbie questions

Hi and welcome. Yes, rats will wee in litter trays but also like plastic trays particularly if it is near their house (why go to the trouble of getting to the bottom of the cage when there is a plastic tray outside the door  ) so you have a couple of options, put another litter tray near their ...

Re: Lump in throat

Vet gave me some more antibiotics to see if we can reduce the lump down and therefore prove it is an abscess. And take it from there.

Re: Taming New Rats

Hi and welcome to the forum and the world of Ratties. Having them in a well trafficked area is good so they can get used to you and new senses. I know you have just put them in but take out the boxes, tubes and hidey holes. Just leave in ropes and flat hammocks, if you haven’t got hammocks yet, a no...

Rat sitting/feeding

We are going on holiday for a week shortly. I have a rat sitter set up but she may not be able to have them. I have a pet sitter visiting the house twice daily for my chinchilla, cat and aviary birds, although the times may not be as set as my feeding time for the boys, 7am and 6pm. If I ask the pet...

Re: Lump in throat

It was an abscess. Must have been cheesy . All cleaned out and feeling sorry for himself. He is with star-lord who also had a mass removed from his side. I’ve not been the vet with the rats for months.....

Re: Lump in throat

Quick update, took Yondu to the vets yesterday as the lump has grown, about size of large grape now. Vet was a bit concerned, she did a fna but nothing came out so it is still possible that it is an abscess just gunked up. He’s back again today for them to operate and have a look at it. It will even...

Re: Conjunctivitis - gel won't stay in rats eye

Not had this problem. Does it not come in liquid form, I have had drops before that have been easier to put in?
