Re: Ear infection causing facial swelling/odd ZGT presentati

Thanks, he's on baytril at the moment. I'll have a chat with the vet and see if I can get him on steroids and another antibiotic as well. Im really hoping its not a ZGT and its just an ear infection that has gotten worse resisting treatment.

Ear infection causing facial swelling/odd ZGT presentation?

I took sardines to the vets about 10days ago with a stinky slightly gunky, pus smelling ear and possible slight inflammation around the area below the ear. Vet opted for ear infection diagnosis and he has had antibiotics and eardrops (and self given metacam because I felt sorry for him) since then. ...

Re: Help! Am I giving my rat too much Baytril??

I'm assuming the baytril injection was just whilst at the vets and you are following up with oral administration? The manufacturers recommend using an initial injection to start treatment (vaguely remember reading this somewhere). Although not many people do so probably due to the risk of baytril bu...

Re: Vet required: Hitchin, Herts

I have seen Lydia chambers at letchworth vets a few times. She is not overly experienced I don't think but she seems to be fairly good and most importantly has been quite open to suggestion when I've seen her.

Re: Outbreak of something here, don't know what to do!

They are all doing really well! A few snuffles here and there but they are almost all perked up back to normal. None have lost any significant weight or had anything severe in terms of symptoms which is a huge relief. Only problem is one boy who has gotten rather chubby from the high calorie foods e...

Re: Outbreak of something here, don't know what to do!

Well we have come home with a huge bottle of baytril and a bottle of dog metacam but she wouldn't give me anything else. I have some steriods about from a recent PT. She also gave me eye drops for one lad who had a slightly sore looking eye. I may ring them tomorrow and speak to my usual vet to atte...

Outbreak of something here, don't know what to do!

I feel so guilty and freaked out right now because its all my fault for not properly quarantining   Last week we 'rescued' two new rats from a free ad- a male and female pair- 9 weeks old. There wasn't much of a plan but i felt i had to rescue them as who knows who could end up with the pr...

Re: Steroid dosage query for suspected PT, also, metacam?

Thanks for all the advice. I gave him about 0.75mg of preds yesterday in the end. Domino is looking a lot perkier this morning so steriods seem to be working! Yay :)

I just had a look and they are 1mg tablets. She did weigh him but I can't remember what it was. I can weigh him again myself though.

Steroid dosage query for suspected PT, also, metacam?

Hiya, I have just been to the vets and come home with some Prednisolone tabs and some baytril for domino's suspected PT.We have had two PTs here before, the first we didn't attempt any treatment for and the other one died the day after diagnosis before we even got a chance to get him onto steriods s...

Weird jaw abscess, need advice please

It has been a while since I posted, I kind of feel like I am becoming a bit of a lurker. One of our elderly ratties has an abscess on her jaw, kind of under her chin in between where her front and back teeth are. Two weeks ago it appeared and she was on septrin(10day course) which made it go down co...

Re: treatment not working..

How long was his course of baytril for in total? It could be that he needs a longer course of baytril or there are a variety of other antibiotics that can be tried. Doxycycline or septrin are two common options, or there are others but no names I can remember. Metacam is good as a supportive treatme...

if you have any local pet shops you could look at buying a rabbit museli possibly? The worse for rabbits it is the better it will be for rats

Re: Please help - Never had this problem before ETA throat l

I would also say an abscess, it sounds like it is in the lymph node kind of area. Ideally the vet would need to give her a brief anaesthesia to open it up and flush it. You should also be given a course of antibiotics. The wound may need to be left open after draining to heal from the inside out to ...

Re: how do you bath a rat please?

I agree that diet is a big part of smell in my experience. Rat nuggets are often the worst although some museli mixes do make them smell quite pongy too. It's worth having a look on here at diet threads to get ideas for other possible diets. We feeed a straights/shumanite diet and find they smell mu...
