Re: Very respy boy, do I double up on his ABs?

My scales aren't super accurate but yesterday he weighed in at somewhere between 420g and 440g, which is down from 470 on Friday. But he's definitely better this morning after some Baytril last night. Sides still sucking but less so, his breathing is quieter, his mouth's mostly closed and he's got m...

Re: Very respy boy, do I double up on his ABs?

It was because of the gasping that I took him to the vet on Friday, he's been like this three days now :/ If he wasn't so full of fight and feistiness I'd have taken him in again but he's still very much himself, just *really* poorly. I caved and gave him baytril earlier, good to know I need to spac...

Re: Complete fur change

My roan Rigel had to be castrated for anxiety problems and his coat's become very soft and silky since. I hadn't noticed him having a particularly different coat type to the other guys but that said his fur is pretty dense, it's hard to get down to his skin when he gets abscesses and so forth.

Very respy boy, do I double up on his ABs?

Hi all, My rescue boy Magnus is really, horribly respy at the moment, side-sucking and gasping. He went to the vet on Friday who prescribed 0.9ml doxy (Ornicure powder) and a diuretic to help get fluid out of his lungs. I added in a bit of metacam myself to help with inflammation and just because it...

Re: Abscess out of nowhere??

Yep, it was an abscess. He decided to chew the top off it while on my lap this evening and get gack all over my dressing gown. I tried to clean it out properly, he clawed me to ribbons and screamed blue murder the whole time, then as soon as I let go he rammed his nose into the crook of my elbow and...

Close to but not at the neutering site - on his belly near his hind leg.

Abscess out of nowhere??

OK, so one of my boys has popped up a lump today - he's 16 months or so, was castrated a few months back and got a nice abscess after that, but is currently healthy and bouncy as usual. Is it possible for them to randomly get abscesses for no apparent reason? Could it still be to do with the surgery...

Re: Oh no...

He's gone  The irony is he wasn't the one with cancer. That's Salt, who is getting grouchier and grabbier all the time but is motoring along fine as long as he gets his Metacam. Maybe I should have started giving it to both of them... for all I know Pep might have had cancer too. It was a reall...

Re: Oh no...

In this situation a rubbish vet is better than no vet. If I'm being brutally honest, it sounds like he really hasn't got a lot of hope and at this point trying meds is not going to be in his best interests, it's just going to prolong a very distressing situation. I had Columbo PTS yesterday and he ...

Re: Oh no...

I'm sorry about Pepper, I would agree that things don't sound good and that he is probably not going to live much longer. However, dying of respiratory failure at home is not a nice way to go, it can be incredibly distressing for both animal and owner and is all round not very nice for anyone. I've...

Oh no...

I think my old man Pepper's on his way out :( He started on ABs for yet-another myco flare-up a few days ago - he was improving, but I noticed a rattle or two yesterday, and tonight he's limp and weak, hollowed-out, rattling with every breath, and barely interested in taking his meds which he normal...

Re: How to support a hooty old man?

Vet fitted him in today, bless them - baytril for now, phone in for doxycycline later in the week if the baytril doesn't do the trick this time. He's had one dose and sounds better already though. :oldbuck:

Re: How to support a hooty old man?

Well he's getting worse not better anyway (I had a feeling he would, these two have never been able to shift myco by themselves) so I'll start him on Baytril myself tonight and get him to the vet tomorrow.

How to support a hooty old man?

So my oldest two are over 24 months now, and both have long histories of myco and some permanent lung damage from it. Since the heating went back on, Pepper is snoring like a champ and hooting pretty much all the time if he's not wide awake. His chest is clear as a bell if I hold him up to my ear, h...

Re: Post neuter abscess. Keep an eye or start antibiotics?

One of mine got an abscess after his neuter, apparently it's very common in male rats after castration - I just left him to it since he didn't seem under the weather and it opened by itself and is now healing nicely.
