Re: urine smells like turps!

We did the xray and the results were pretty shocking. His spine was very malformed, missing several vertebrae and two of the sacral bones. Worse still, the spinal canal narrowed significantly before the hip, which explains why he had no signals telling him to urinate. It also explains why he was con...

Re: urine smells like turps!

The culture came back showing E Coli in the urine :S

But apparently that is sensitive to Baytril, so I guess I jut keep going with that and see if the vet has any solution to the urine retention problem...

Re: urine smells like turps!

He had another check while waiting for the culture, but from the urine sample he had a lot of bacteria present. The vet managed to squeeze a lot of urine out of him, and the stream is quite free suggesting no blockage. The smell could be the fact the urine is being held for so long, also leading to ...

Re: urine smells like turps!

Just an update. The antibiotics did seem to improve things, temporarily, but over Christmas the smell is back so I've changed vets. New vet took a huge urine sample today and it's going off for all kind of analysis including a culture. But her theory is the same as mine : spinal deformation means si...

Re: Septrin - Alfie won't touch it...! Advice please

I've had to syringe antibiotics for a few rats, none of them so far have given me trouble, I must be lucky! I usually hold both front paws with one hand cupping their body while holding front legs in a 'scissor' between my fingers. I come in sideways with the syringe to get it right into the mouth. ...

urine smells like turps!

My ever sick rat seems to be sick! Travis had a terrible urine infection when I got him as a kitten, but now this smells totally different. His urine is dark and smells very strong, like turps. He is actually surprisingly bright compared to his usual self. Does anyone know what would do this to him,...

Re: new members - ETA spam alert, don't follow the links

I've never seen anything like this before. Why are they targeting FR out of the blue? The spambots are aimed at forums by their software, not their content. They know we won't be interested in any of the rubbish posted, but the spammers use our forum as free web space to get links out there. By lea...

Re: Do all neutered bucks have super soft fur?

Ah my lovely boys! <3 Something I found strange though, the softest furred rat I've ever had was a complete Siamese buck. He was rescue so unsure what age he was when I got him but he was absolutely huge so must have been least 6 months. It was super long as well though, wonder if it was some geneti...

That does sound like a good option- the lack of pressure should give him less reason to chew.

Re: Still big testicles after neuter but looks fully healed?

I would push for both. Gary had an abscess post neuter and although he ended up having an operation, He was also on septrin and his recovery was very very quick.

Re: Rat missing front legs

my initial reaction was horror, but this owner seems to be doing their best to help little one adjust. only the owner knows if the rat has quality of life.

The thought of an adult losing both front legs is a lot more difficult.

I use a sharp pair of human nail scissors, found that anything marketed for pets is too blunt and too awkward to use.

Re: Rat missing front legs

I found the image of the rat with no limbs, and it did bring a lump to my throat. I just can't see how he has quality of life. If anyone wants to see him, and I will strongly warn that it us hard to look at, you can search Lucky the legless. Can't stress enough that it is upsetting, so please don't ...

Re: Can Septrin and Baytril be combined?

Should warm salt water be ok? He is still perky. They are really bored in their hospital cage, very worrying how rats hide pain, these two have holes in them and acting like nothing happened. I did give then some ibuprofen because without then showing pain, it's better to presume they have it than n...
