Re: Please help! Really bad side-sucking

I'm at a loss as to what to do about Ruby  She has lost 40g in 9 days, going from 340g to 300g and she is skin and bone now. Her breathing is extremely laboured again. Not gasping yet, but very side-sucky. When the vet did the x-ray and found that her lungs were full of fluid last week he gave ...

Re: Please help! Really bad side-sucking

The vet just rang. She has tons of fluid on her lungs. Apparently she only has about 20% available lung capacity! The vet said he couldn't see any tumours but they could be hiding amongst the fluid so he can't be sure. He reckons it's more likely to be an underlying heart condition, but the fact tha...

Re: Please help! Really bad side-sucking

Well sadly the ronaxan and baytril did nothing and she had another injection of Dexafort on Monday and that also did nothing  She's lost a lot of weight. She was about 530g in June and is now just 350g. Her breathing isn't as bad as before she had her first steroid. It's laboured and very side-...

Re: Please help! Really bad side-sucking

Thank you, that's interesting. She never showed any signs of infection that we are used to seeing, such as sneezing, wheezing, clicky breathing. It's just been extreme side-sucking, fast breathing, mouth breathing and then gasping. It's just odd that in every other sense she looks so well in herself...

Re: Please help! Really bad side-sucking

Thank you, I will do that. The steroid was dexafort so should have worn off within 3-4 days I think? I guess she may have started to decline once it wore off but it took a week longer for it to really be noticeable? I find it hard to notice a difference from one day to the next but can definitely sa...

Re: Please help! Really bad side-sucking

Ruby appears to be getting worse again... :( It's been just over two weeks since she had the steroid injection and she has been on Fortekor once daily since. She was also on baytril until two days ago but we took her off it because we don't think it's an active infection and she'd been on it for two...

Re: Side-sucking, restlessness

Aw no, that's so sad! :( I'm really sorry to hear that. Especially as she looked to be improving last night. Take comfort in the fact that she didn't have to suffer for long. In fact it sounds like she didn't suffer much at all towards the end and was happily eating and being a normal rat again. Alt...

Re: Side-sucking, restlessness

Hiya. As the owner of the rat from the previous thread I thought I'd jump in and offer some advice too! Think of it as a positive that you've only been given a steroid and not heart meds for today because you WILL know within 24 hours or so whether or not the steroid has made a difference and if it ...

Re: Please help! Really bad side-sucking

Ok that's really useful to know, thanks. Well so far, so good. Touch wood. Her breathing hasn't deteriorated yet. She's been back in her normal cage with Jimmy since last night and she's eating, drinking, running around fine. It's like it never happened. When I compare her breathing to Jimmy's, it's...

Re: Please help! Really bad side-sucking

Yeah that's a good point. I guess I just don't want to get my hopes up... I'm just hoping she doesn't deteriorate as the steroid wears off. She's such a little fighter. If it's an option to have another steroid injection then I think we will go for that.

Re: Please help! Really bad side-sucking

That's what I'm trying to work out... I suspect that it makes the lung tumour more likely than the heart issue :( I might put her in with Jimmy tonight. I've held off on that for the last 2 days because I didn't want her to get stressed. They chase each other a bit. Just in a playful way, not aggres...

Re: Please help! Really bad side-sucking

She's really perked up a lot in the last 48 hours so I think the steroid has made a big difference. She's almost back to her normal, cheeky self, eating and drinking as before and running around. I am still keeping her separate from the others although she has short playdates with her best friend Ji...

Re: Please help! Really bad side-sucking

Well we took her back to the vets yesterday afternoon, shortly after I wrote the last message, and she was on oxygen for 20 minutes and the vet gave her fluids and a steroid injection (dexafort). Vet agrees that it's most likely either heart or lung tumour and said that we should give it 24 hours an...

Re: Please help! Really bad side-sucking

She's been on diuretics now for 24 hours and has had two doses of the Fortekor. She's made no improvement  If anything, she's probably getting worse. I'm starting to seriously worry about her quality of life now. Every time I try and get some baby food into her, she grabs it enthusiastically li...

Re: Please help! Really bad side-sucking

Well our appointment was in a couple of hours time but I've just rushed her to another vet as she was mouth breathing. Saw a young and inexperienced vet who confessed he'd never treated a rat before so I basically just told him what I wanted and came out with frusol and fortekor (and some septrin he...
