Re: What do I do about rat urine?

https://images.app.goo.gl/nUo1KWoCgXwdipT66 This is not my actual rat cage but this is the exact same one I have. I know it has plastic shelves that you pointed out that they urinate on but I like to have different levels for them to have more choice of places to run around. Anyway plastic can be e...

I'm sorry, I don't know how to post a picture. I wanted to post a picture of my rat cage.

Re: What do I do about rat urine?

I hear a lot of contradictions about what's good and what's not good for rats. I watch a lot of YouTube videos by pet-lovers, and each one says a different thing and I never know what to believe. But I have heard that rats can be prone to respiratory infections if the cage isn't cleaned enough. I've...

Re: What do I do about rat urine?

I use a bit of dust-free hay and rat-friendly paper shreddings at the bottom of their cage, and grey pellets in their litter tray. They love to forage. Maybe I do more spot checks than I should, but I worry about them living in an unhealthy mess and ammonia build-up. I heard rat urine can become tox...

What do I do about rat urine?

My 2 boys are excellent at using the litter tray to poo in, but they seem to urinate everywhere and I don't know what to do about it. I do spot checks and clean their cage out regularly, and they are both very healthy - but I've often had to throw away their gnaw toys because they seem to urinate al...

Re: One of my boys bites humans

Humping cagemates is perfectly normal; it's generally a dominance thing, though does will also get humped by cagemates when they're in season. If you have a group of young does it can get pretty ridiculous some evenings. If he's drawing blood even through gloves though, that's fairly aggressive and...

Re: One of my boys bites humans

Maybe I should get him neutered then. He does have higher levels of testosterone than the other rat. He shows affection towards the other rat such as grooming and they usually sleep huddled up together, but when he's in one of his playful moods he gets a bit over-erratic and sometimes bullies the ot...

Re: One of my boys bites humans

My albino rat still keeps biting, even though I'm picking him up every day but using a gardening glove (I use the same glove). But last night when I was trying to pick him up he bit my hand, with the glove on, and it still drew blood. The pain was worse than a wasp sting and it throbbed on and off a...

Re: How to clean my rats toys?

Parrot toys and baby toys it is then. Looks like I'll be going on a shopping spree very soon.
:D
Thank you for the advice. My rats say thank you too!

Re: How to clean my rats toys?

Thank you for the advice. So you really think baby toys will be safe? I'm not talking about battery-operated toys, I'm talking more about those chunky plastic ones for babies under 1. I want as much entertainment for my boy's as possible, as they are rather active and enjoy discovering different thi...

How to clean my rats toys?

OK, this is the one thing that is bothering me. I clean my boy's cage out regularly but I'm not sure what to do with their toys. I have a couple of gnaw objects in their cage that they can climb on/in as well as gnaw, but I can't explain what they're made of, but anyway I discovered these objects ha...

Re: One of my boys bites humans

I have actually took them out of the cage and put them into the bath (not with water in!), and it was easier to hold the white rat (the one who normally bites). Well, he didn't like being held, because when I did hold him he screeched. But he didn't bite, and he was easier to grab because he didn't ...

Accidentally pulled my rat's tail

I'm training one of my rats and he's got more confident having a little run around just outside the cage (supervised of course). But suddenly a loud firework banged outside and it frightened my poor rat, and instead of running back into the cage he went to run underneath the cabinet. I panicked beca...
