Re: Potential owner looking for advice
Can’t you take take them with you when you are traveling? I would only do that if you don’t have to fly and have an experienced vet there as well as at home. I consider a week quite long to not receive any attention. Less than normal, okay, but non at al…And wat about other care? Things like cleanin...

Great that you see positive changes!
Did they happen to tell you more about their experience with implants and why they choose this over neutering?

Re: favorit toys
Mine don’t play whit those kinds of toys either. What they do like: a roll of toilet paper (put on top of the cage with a strand of paper hanging in the gage) to build nests, paper tea bag’s hanging on a string, filled with food, stuffed toilet rolls with food inside, a feathers on a stick cat toy (...

Re: Fresh foods suggestions
I would have never thought of making seitan for the rats! I'm making it tonight so I may well put some aside that's not heavily seasoned for them to try. That’s how I do it as well. I make their pumpkin – seitan dish when I make mine, but I don’t season theirs or only put some rat appropriate herbs...

Re: How to build op the group
The idea is the same, but it usually goes a lot easier, so you can go through the process faster. I would expect that you can have them in a half-decorated cage in 24 hours.
I don’t use a carrier but introduce them on neutral territory and move on to a small cage if they don’t show aggression.

Some things I feed my rats regularly when they are young: -broccoli with lentils and quinoa -celery and tofu (blended) -Pak choy, sweet potato (blended) and chickpeas -kale, nettle and yofu (blended) -pumpkin, peas, and homemade seitan (gluten flour and chickpea flour) -a salad of leafy greens, chic...

Re: Hormonal Implant for rats
No experience with implants, but curious to know more about them. If the vets aren’t keen on spaying, they definitely shouldn’t spay your rat (or preform any other operation on them). As cub says, a vet who is capable of preforming surgery on rats is very necessity if you have rats. They will need s...

Did her behavior change back after she got of the meds or was she still getting them?
Good luck at the vet tomorrow.

Re: Strange recurring infection
No, she didn’t take a swap. We actually never do, unless an infection isn’t responding well to the antibiotics. She gets a painkiller and two kinds of antibiotics by the way. One local and one oral.

Strange recurring infection
One of my girls had an abscess on her troth a couple of months ago. Friday night I noticed that it came back, and my vet operated on Saturday. The abscess wasn’t well capsuled in, but the strange thing was that, surrounded by pus, there were lymph glands. My vet took a biopsy and the tissue will be ...

Re: My mom does not want a rat because they smell
I agree with cub and cyber ratty. Rats (yes always plural ;) ) are in many ways very different than hamsters, the smell is one of them. Rats poop a lot more, there are more of them and they drink a lot more and therefor also pee a lot more. It is mostly the pee that makes the cage smell quickly. Rat...

Re: Grieving advice
To make things difficult ;) , I wouldn’t if the don’t want to. They want cuddles, but don’t want to explore. I would give them their cuddles and some time to grieve. In my experience, they need that, and it takes about a week until the worst is blown over. Then they can use distraction and new cage ...
