Re: How do you know when its the right time to put rat to sl

I'm really sorry, this is always a difficult decision  Ultimately it is your decision and you know your rat best to be able to tell when you think she doesn't have as good quality of life. All I can say is that I have the same point of view as you - I'd use the same reasons to judge when it was...

Re: Newbie rat owners - 9 week olds, drawing blood biting

Your hands must have been really fishy!  First of all, don't feed them through the bars. It depends on the rat, but some automatically grab anything that comes through the bars anyway, so the possibility that it might be food only encourages this! You can try feeding them something like ...

Re: Bad influence from other rats?

Learned behaviour (according to some experts), kicks in (for instance like my one female who bites when stroked) when they discover / learn that biting discourage any form of touching. The owner will eventually stop doing it, and the biting rat gets what it wants. They recommend that you keep on ha...

Re: Bad influence from other rats?

I don't know how much I can help, but I thought I'd have a go! I've only ever heard of learned behaviour acting in the opposite way - that if you put skittish rescues with social outgoing rats, it will help them become more confident. Not all rats like staying still and being cuddled - could it just...

Re: New owners need help....

Rats have been visited, and I have been bitten  They are lovely girls, but slightly lacking in manners! They will come round really quickly with regular handling. Just thought I would update the thread to say that anyone new to rats having similar issues should see if there's anyone local who...

Re: New owners need help....

I'm in Newcastle if you want someone to come round as a test bite subject  It's difficult when you're new to rats as they are always a lot better when handled confidently, but it's difficult to have the confidence when you don't have the experience with ratty body language and behaviour. Rats o...

Re: Doxy Dose

Do you know how much he weighs? I normally dose 1/8th - 1/6th of a 20mg tablet for my does, so it sounds like he could maybe be on a higher dose. I'd say that if he was last on meds 6 weeks ago, you want to treat him for a longer period of time this time and possibly with a higher dose to try and cl...

Re: Name that colour

I'm not an expert, but I'd guess that Luna is British blue and I'd have said that Belle was mink from the "better light" photo, but then in the photo with them all on, she looks like she does have ticking - it might just be the photo though?

Looks like you have a great group there!

Mine get it probably once a week. It normally takes them a couple of days to finish a bottle off.

Re: Baby Rats Sick?

I wouldn't be too concerned about the sneezing, it's probably just her adjusting to a new environment. What substrate are you using? I'd keep an eye on Luna, but if she continues to seem drowsy, she might need to see a vet. She might just need a little time to get used to her new home. Is she eating...

Re: Rat Proof Living Room

I'd say it depends how confident the girls are with you - are they likely to get scared and hide? If so, it might be worth keeping them in a smaller area until they've built their confidence up a bit. If they hid, how easy would it be for you to get them out? Also be careful that they can't get up i...

Re: Handling and Training Baby Rats

Even very scared rats rarely bite. I've had quite a few scaredy rescues and have never been bitten when picking them up. So try not to worry about it, because if you feel nervous holding them, the rats will be able to tell, and it will make them more nervous themselves. :luck:

Re: Please help with awful rat smell!

If you give them cardboard substrate and some ripped up newspaper, it's likely that they'll drag bits into their pods to make a bed. This will soak up some of the wee so it's less likely to soak into the rats! You can clean out the old bits of paper every couple of days to stop it smelling too bad.
