Re: Help

To catch them, you may be able to tempt them into a long tube (put some smell food halfway along it), and then block both ends. Alternatively, shepherd them into a corner, blocking off their escape routes as you go, and then once it's just you and them in a small space, either pick them up or encour...

Re: Too many cherios???

I'm afraid the average life expectancy is actually only 2, getting to 3 is uncommon, and they often look pretty decrepit by then. It is hard that their lives are so short, but they pack a lot in, and if you can focus on how special it was to have had them, rather than on how sad their loss is, then ...

Re: Too many cherios???

Yes, scatter it over the finacard, and change it after a week, or once they are in the SRS (great choice! :D ) you may find it lasts more like a fortnight. Rats adore eating where they poo, lol! There's nothing to worry about, in fact they re-ingest some poos anyway to a, it's known as coprophagy. ;...

Re: New rat cage help

At one extreme I would suggest an SRS 95 - fully opening at the front so really easy to clean. If that's too big for your space/budget, then a single critter nation is the equivalent of half an SRS. If budget restriction mean a CN is out of the question, then you could get a coco 100 for a fraction ...

Re: red eyes - but tan coloured

Hi, welcome to the forum :D Some red eyed rats can have more difficulty seeing than others, so you may see him swaying his head from side to side to get a better focus, and if you find he gets startled when you approach then choose a phrase to say that will let him know you're about to pick him up. ...

Re: Too many cherios???

Hi, welcome to the forum and to rat keeping. :) I'm sorry to say you've been badly advised... 1) rats should be given a good quality mixed diet full of varied tastes and textures, so nuggets are not only unsuitable because they are homogenous, but the burgess ones (also the PAH ones because they are...

Re: Keeping the cage from stinking?

Hi, and welcome to the forum. :) What bedding are you using, and what makes you think Candy is allergic to it, what are her symptoms? If she is sneezing, it could very well be down to the stress of being alone, and in a new home, or she could have a respiratory infection rather than an allergy. A go...

Re: our first poorly rat,

Why is the vet treating all 3? If they aren't all showing symptoms they shouldn't be treated. Also, antibiotics should never be given in their water - even if they all should be having it, you can't know how much each is getting, and the taste may stop them drinking normally. Nebulisers seem fashion...

Re: Myco-resistance?

Most of the breeders on the NFRS list will be selecting for myco resistance, and if they've been doing that for a while, or their foundation rats came from a line with resistance, then you will see a huge improvement. There can be exceptions of course, but generally you can expect that to be one of ...

Re: Rat in garden with collar? Possible pet?

Hi Lou - I answered on FB, but so long as you can check a trap twice a day, and put plenty of moist food in it, then the rat should be fine until you discover it. It can take rats several days to trust a trap enough to go in, so don't be disheartened if it's empty for quite a while. I am intrigued a...

Re: Forum downtime - Monday 15/10/18

So I did have a go, but failed. I'd taken a backup before my attempt and have now restored it - so if you managed to post something inbetween I'm afraid it will have been lost.

I'm just waiting for some advice before I try again, but hopefully it will be tomorrow.

Forum downtime - Monday 15/10/18

I shall be attempting to upgrade the forum software tomorrow morning - I've not done it before so I'm not sure how long it will take me, but hopefully it will be back before lunchtime.

Once I've successfully updated the current forum, I'll do the same for the archive.

Wish me luck!

Re: Advice following a vet visit.

Your brain is right, there is no point in separating them, and it is actively the wrong thing to do from a social aspect. When rats have respiratory symptoms, the usual culprits are organisms which all rats have anyway so they can't infect any others, and if there were to be a new virus (e.g. brough...
