Re: Medical advice needed

Yep, 2 tablets per 500mls.

I used small water bottles so it got drunk pretty quickly.

Re: hi all newbie here

The photos aren't very clear and I'm looking at them on my phone but they are both roans as has been said. Roan and husky are the same thing, roan is the British name for husky, which is American. Roan is a marking, like hooded and Berkshire, and can come in any colour. The top photo looks like a bl...

Re: dull coats?

I've always found rescues' coats improve just by being with me and on the diet I feed mine normally. It's s mix of various things and changes all the time but I use rat rations and farm shops.

Re: Bulletin about FR on Social Media

I understand where you're both coming from but it's a 'big advert' for the forum somewhere that people do spend a lot of time so might publicise us. Perhaps it will make no difference and people won't be enticed over, but a group would be unmanageable so this is the best way for us to have some kind...

Spam today - 14/12/14

We're sorry about the rather ridiculous amount of spam you've had to tolerate today. They've started sending private messages now which is just so far beyond acceptable that I've disabled new member registration for now. It won't be for long, it's just an emergency measure. Please continue to report...

Re: Rat in season- blood??

I just spay straight away when there is blood. If it's fresh blood it's normally not an infection, an infection usually produces pus ridden old dark blood. The last rat I had who was spotting fresh blood had a 'stone baby' that her body had decided to try and birth. She'd had had a litter 6 months p...

Not that's closer than Maidstone to you really! SW London to SE London is a longer journey than I realise half the time.

Re: ZGT vs abcsess?

Just FYI it was a ZGT. The abscess completely went. It looked like it was going to be a typical abscess. Then it suddenly erupted again with a classic ZGT abscess and ulceration in her ear. She was put to sleep as she was clearly already in fairly significant pain. She was wonderful, tough as old bo...

Re: Recurring Rat Abscess and Castrating Male Rats

It sounds like the right decision to me. It's always hard, but you came through for him when he needed you. If it was a ZGT (and it sounds like one) they are horrible things. Some people put to sleep the moment they start, as all you can do is try to keep them comfortable. There is no cure and they ...

Re: Trying to make sense of suddend death

I'm glad it helped. I've had a lot of rats put to sleep and that's the philosophy I've developed over the years. I had two rats put to sleep today. It does get easier the more you go through it, but you always feel sad for yourself and how you'll miss them, even if you no longer feel sad for them. E...

Re: Trying to make sense of suddend death

My daughter worried a lot that Fizz would think she didn't love him because she 'let' him be pts, and my answer to her was that he would know she loved him, because she did. Putting a sick animal to sleep to end their suffering is one of the hardest and most powerful acts of love. Sometimes it's no...

Re: Issues after neutering my two males

It isn't normal, no. I've lost two rats to post op infections after a neuter, since then they always have antibiotic cover after the operation. Just baytril will do it but I have used synulox too. A rat neuter is more complicated than something like a dog, just due to the musculature around rat test...

Re: Hiding Amoxicillin.

If they'll take it in gravy just give it to them in gravy. It's better that they have the medicine. When I've got ill rats all my feeding rules go out the window and I'll give them anything they want! It's better that they eat/get their meds and I'm probably over cautious with their diet anyway. I u...
