Re: Teeth - clipping or burring?
I had a rat called Gio who had a misaligned jaw from birth. He had his teeth burred for the first time at 7 weeks old, at the vet. He was incredibly traumatised by it. I went back 2 weeks later to have them done again, and again - the noise of the machine, the fact that he wasn't at home, plus the p...

Re: Coffee bean.
We have black tiles in the kitchen, and my hubby always makes his espresso with fresh beans, so inevitably we usually have one or 2 coffee beans hiding somewhere on the black kitchen floor. And the rats free range in the kitchen.... So once or twice one of them has munched up a bean, but we've never...

Re: sprain?
I might be a bit of a mean mummy, but I don't usually give painkillers or adjust cages for things like this. The more they feel it, the less they use it, the quicker they heal. I always worry that if they get the painkillers they'll be more inclined to try and do more, and heal more slowly, or even ...

Re: lice/mites freerange?
The only live that can live off the host are blood lice, and it's unlikely you have those. Your rats can free range without any issues. Even disinfecting the floor is not necessary, but feel free to do it, if it makes you feel better. Remember that rats always have mites to some extent. It's just ho...

Re: Scabs/lumps on tail?
Hibiscrub is fine, but i found Ruan hated it. I think it felt burny when I applied it. In the end I used Betadine shampoo, from the pharmacy which he was fine with.

Re: Scabs/lumps on tail?
One of my boys had a tail covered in those kinds of lumps and bumps, and also scabs. In his case it was because he never cleaned his tail, and it got a little infected under the scales. Treatment involved washing his tail with disinfectant soap daily, and squeezing out the lumps now and then. In his...

Re: Where Can I purchase Harlan Teklad in the UK/ Use as a s
Not sure how old your rats are, but the mix you're proposing now is very high in fat and protein. Th fruit and nut mix is really intended as a treat, not to add to mixes. Check out some of the articles about feeding on the forum, and I also recommend purchasing a copy of The Scuttling Gourmet, if yo...

Re: New to rats, New to mixes
Mixing a balanced food for rats is not as easy as it seems. If you want to mix yourself, I suggest buying Alison Campbell's The Scuttling Gourmet (available at RatRation.com). Even though I run ratrations.nl, I suck at making my own mixes. So I just follow the recipes I'm given and all is well with ...

Re: Gangrene of the tail due to HLD
I had a boy with a chronically infected tail (he never kept it clean, so it was always lumpy, and occasionally you could squeeze pus out of the lumps -- ). He developed severe HLD as he grew old, but never developed gangrene in his tail. I would not see gangrene as a logical consequence of HL...

Re: Lice treatment for lots of rats?
A spray which is usually used for blood lice works best. I use beaphar 404 spray, but you can't get that there. I know RR have pter sprays for the same purpose though. You can spray all the rats, and their cage etc too!

Re: What is a penile plug?
It's the smell. It's different to an abcess smell, and somehow worse to me, even though it's not as strong. Dunno why really... I work in daycare so I'm used to rank smells, but this one really gets me.

Yes, and usually multiple times a day. Penis plugs are totally disgusting. I'm ok with abscesses and stuff, but these make me want to heave!

Squirrel, you've not actually responded to all the posts explaining why the Feeder Breeder section IS useful. You've simply gone off -topic about a P@H 'rescue'. If you want more info about why those kinds of rehoming posts are not allowed, please feel free to contact FR Admin, or start another post...

Re: Home Made Rat Mix
At the moment your mix looks to me a bit like a treat mix. There's no protein source, and no basic grains and pulses. As has been mentioned, you need a base mix to add this to. What you've listed here is maybe the last 10 - 20% of a mix. It's definitely not a complete mix.
