Rats can continue growing until they are around a year old.

Mine have only ever grown 'rounder' over that age mwahaha!

Re: New Rat Owner

Puberty? When does that occur for a rat? Is there anything I should keep an eye out for with him? I think with rats it occurs about 3 months. They are adults and full grown at 6 months. Bucks who have too much testosterone can start to exhibit aggressive behaviour (solved by neutering) at 3 months....

Re: New Rat Owner

I wouldn't neuter a buck either. They aren't like cats and dogs in that respect. If he gets through pubity with no aggression I think he'll be fine keeping his nads. And I also second the recommendation to get two more rats. Three is a great number. We've currently got three and it's really a nice l...

Re: When to reintroduce rats

Good advice. We had two lots of rats who lived separately but had free range together. When one died, we combined the survivor with the other group of two. It worked well. I'm sorry for your loss.

Re: Is my rats wholefood diet well rounded?

We give our rats a little dairy like low fat yogurt or cereal and milk, which they love. Are you vegan? We aren't so I'm not sure but as rats are omnivores like humans, and humans can be vegans, it should be OK. The diet you give the girls does sound very good and varied and just the kind of things ...

Sorry I am on my phone, but I just tried to post again and it comes up with a message saying the post has been successful but needs to be approved by a moderator.

Posts not approved?

I posted in the rat names threads, both boys and girls names. It said my posts need to be approved, but this was yesterday morning. Is it just that the mods haven't had time to review my posts?

Re: Recently New Rat Owner - Advice Needed

PS If possible, I'd get the boy who doesn't want to come out and actually put him in the room or play area so he gets used to it. You can also show him how to go back in if he needs to drink or whatever. We have a big parrot ladder that comes down from our cage (it's on a stand) and with new rats we...

Re: Recently New Rat Owner - Advice Needed

I think it is still early days for these two boys. It might be an idea to get them used to you by carrying them around (such as when pottering or doing dishes etc) in a hoodie or big pocket, or you can buy 'rat bonding bags' online. This will get them used to the smell of you and your son. You could...

Re: Dealing with the loss of cagemate

Would it be possible to adopt a ratty of a similar age ie 18 months? That way, whoever goes first, the other is less likely to be on her own for as long. I'm so sorry for your loss of Skyler.

Re: Am I doing a good job?

You sound like you are doing great! We have had a couple of baby girls about the same length of time as you and progress sounds about the same as ours. I'm picking up a third girl tomorrow so that should cause even more trouble lol! But hopefully the new girl will pick up the semi confidence from th...
