Re: Eldery Rat -Lice

Whether to put her to sleep or not will depend on how much quality of life you think she still has. It does sound to me like she is starting to struggle but only you can really decide when it is time. You do however need to treat the lice asap as these won't be making her feel great. You will need I...

Re: Liberta 2nd Edition Explorer Vs SRS

Personally I would say SRS. I have both an SRS (ok, 2 joined now) and an old type Explorer. I got deep metal trays made as the flimsy plastic trays just don't hold enough substrate. Where I volunteer we have the new type explorers. They have metal trays but they rust very easily and aren't deep enou...

Re: Rats and other pets

Welcome to the forum and great that you are asking questions before getting your newbies :D I, and many other forum users have had both rats and hamsters at the same time. Where I volunteer the rats share the room with all the other rodents and we have never noticed any worrying behaviour from them ...

Re: mama acting mental after cleaning cage

Ah, thanks Mary. I had made the assumption that the nest had been retained then returned to the cage

Re: Bolshie, fighting ratty, keep separated or not?

I would probably get Finckle neutered as soon as possible as it sounds like he may be hormonal. I don't see any reason to get Hanzo neutered so would get him introduced back into the group once he's healed enough.

Re: mama acting mental after cleaning cage

I'm guessing she was grateful for the clean and was just checking out what had changed as it smelled different. I'm sure she'll settle. I wouldn't worry. It's normal for rats to go nuts exploring when you clean their cage.

I volunteer at wood green as Redfraggle has suggested. I'm sure we could help you find some friends for your little one. Feel free to pm me

Re: Introducing another rat or rats to my 1 year old Male

I would definitely suggest a couple more so you don't end up with a lone rat soon. Most people say babies are easiest but personally i think it depends. Whereabouts are you? Maybe we could suggest somewhere sensible to source some new friends?

Re: Baby Rats! Help!!

Aw, hope all goes well. Good advice about checking the other newbie is definitely female. If he's a buck, maybe you could consider getting him castrated when he's old enough so that he can stay with the group he knows. (You'd need to wait a month to be sure he's no longer fertile). Make sure Mum ha...

Re: how many should live together?

A cage really should be big enough for 4 rats to give enough space to fit the essential furniture and to provide space to move around. Try putting cage dimensions in the cage calculator here http://www.fancyratsforum.co.uk/calculator/cagecalc.html The cage you have is easy to make into a tower to cr...

Re: When and whether to spay

My preference for age is mostly based on the fact that at 6 months the rats are big enough and robust enough to cope with the anaesthetic. I have found that they bounce back much quicker than older rats and heal quicker. Logic also says if they have had less exposure to the hormones which cause tumo...

Re: modifying furret XL tower

It has a hole Mary which enables you to post the tube through minus the ring connector and then re-fit the connector making a snug fit.

Re: modifying furret XL tower

I agree with Mary. Put a shelf below the hole and you can use the tube to allow your old lady to get up to the shelf. I did similar when I had an old lad in my SRS who had no concept of how far a drop was and was constantly flinging himself off things.

Re: been a long time, some advice needed

I too would suggest rehoming the last 2 when you are down to a pair. I haven't been in this position but have adopted rats from friends when they were down to their last 2 and unable to get more for whatever reason. It worked really well for those guys and much less upheaval than losing their only f...
