My ratties get freerange of the whole room every day, but only for half an hour per cage because I have 9 cages at present and there isn't enough evening for more. I use a hand bell to call each group back for teatime and they usually come back quite eagerly. They rarely have a day without freerange.
These ropes are made of old bedsheets because I was clearing out my linen cupboard and wanted to put them to good use. You could use old curtains or any other handy material.
