Re: Abscess, need help with cleaning!! Thank you!

I don't have much experience with this, but could you distract him by letting him lick something yummy off a spoon?
Possibly wrapped in a towel to restrict movement if needed.

Such a difficult place to have an abscess.

Re: Site pictures

I think deleted photobucket images result in a placer image like on the 7th post down on this show your set up thread.

Could you maybe just start a new account, either on pb or a different site like tinypic?

Re: Advice please - Lump on male rat, vet won't touch it

Sorry I can't offer any advice, but if you let us know where you're located someone might be able to recommend a nearby vet who's good with rats.

EDIT - Sorry, I see you've already asked about vets elsewhere

Re: how many times a day for baytril?

The hooting noise when sleeping is a combination of a bit of mucus getting stuck and compression of the airways. Rats have a habit of sleeping with their heads in really daft positions ("ooh, I've got a resp infection! I kknow, I'll fold my neck double and sit on my own head! ), which doesn'...

Re: sick rat

How is she today, any improvement after 4 days of Baytril? From what you've said about her; off her food, poor balance and not cleaning porphyrin (red stuff) from her face it sounds like she has hurt herself quite badly. If she hasn't improved after a course of antibiotics and her quality of life is...

Re: sick rat

Hi, sorry to hear your rat isn't very well at the moment.
I can't offer much advice, I'm sure someone will post soon, but if you could tell us where you are located, someone might be able to recommend a vet that has experience with rats in your local area.

Nail Tail

Well, after 30 minutes of panic wondering if their tails were dying, falling off and/or being eaten I think I've reassured myself it's just 'nail tail' and is common, please can someone confirm? Since I've had them their tail tips have been pinkish, I'd considered they had been degloved since they w...

Re: I'm new is my rat mix safe please help

I can't offer much advice, but to help someone will need to know what sort of rat food it is. I've heard some rats are allergic to sunflower seeds, and they have high fat content. I think Special K is 17% sugar which is too high, you want under 4% I believe. If you have a read through some of the ol...

Re: Mix Check Please

Thanks for your speedy reply. I think for now I will purchase more 11a complete mix, a copy of The Scuttling Gourmet and do some research into the protein levels. If, for example, the chickpeas are 25% protein and the soya flakes are 30% protein, where does that leave me? Am I aiming to have between...

Mix Check Please

Rather than do my assignments I've spent this evening attempting to make a food mix. I seem to have contributed to the RatRations site going offline just now, so will ask my questions here... If I plan to make a 10kg total amount am I right to have: 55% base - 5.5kg of RR base containing paddy rice,...

Re: Operation for an Abscess?

Saw a different vet today and he didn't mention lancing it, we're going to let it develop naturally, going back on wednesday. He's started being a bit picky with his Baytril, will have to experiment with new flavours to cover it. He didn't like ribena, honey on the tip worked until today. Did manage...

Operation for an Abscess?

Randy developed an abscess a week after his neuter operation and I took him to the vets to double check what it was and he was prescribed .25ml baytril twice a day and to go back on saturday to see how it gets on. The vet suggested that he gives Randy general anesthetic and drains it, from the threa...

Re: Barbering due to pain?

Thanks for your replies. The vet didn't find anything obviously wrong, but said it could be an old injury and arthritis is the cause of the pain, the vet I saw for his check up said I could put him on lifelong anti-inflammatories. Does anyone have any advice or experience of something similar? A bes...
