Re: Which mite treatment is safest?

I've always used Beaphar spot-on (ivermectin) with no unwanted side-effects, but recently the vet gave me a bottle of Frontline spray which I'm instructed to spray onto a cotton wool pad and then apply to the rats coats. It seems to have done the job with no irritation so I'll be using that from now...

Re: How would I know if my rat is blind/deaf?

Sometimes if rats feel very threatened or vulnerable they will not show any signs of being aware of noises/movement. I had a siamese boy who was bitey and never did the head-swaying thing either, he would just stay perfectly still during the vets tests for blind/deafness, but the vet still maintaine...

Glad there's been no further cases. Don't forget to put this on the "contagious infections record" in Health for future reference please :)

I haven't had chance to thoroughly read this but they (or their neighbours) don't have wild rats, do they?

Re: [Images] Tumor/abcess in groin region? (Buck)

I always do the same for abscesses and this does look to be a preputial gland about to burst, I agree with snais' above advice to soak it (but I ruthlessly use quite hot water) and keep soaking until the thing comes to a head. At which point a scab may soon appear which can be removed gently and thi...

Re: Administering Baytril - Tips or tricks please!

For the first time since I started keeping rats, I've had a battle getting baytril into one of my boys. In desperation I bought a bag of croutons from Waitrose and now i syringe the meds onto the crouton then drizzle with a bit of honey/baby food/etc :) I think they like that its crunchy.

Re: Urgent - advice needed on wound care

And I think I'd ask the vet to remove the staples, clean it, then just leave it be. It will have started healing now and any sort of sewing or glueing up could just close in any infection. Best leave it to heal by itself in my opinion :luck:

Re: Urgent - advice needed on wound care

To be honest, I would probably pull out the staple that is hanging out and just leave it all alone. I'm constantly amazed by how quickly huge holes/cuts heal in rats. Basically, don't panic :) If you have any metacam or other pain relief (search calprofen or calpol on here) I would give a dose becau...
