Re: Help please!

First of all, have you got a separate cage to move the boy(s) into? I would leave the babies where they are. You will need to determine if Lorcan or Lysander is the mum - if you pick them up and have a look at their tummies, you should be able to see nipples on a girl. If you can see nipples on them...

Re: Very energetic boy

It might just be because of them having to re-establish the hierarchy?

Re: New to rat care

Being picked up is a little more intimidating for unsocialised rats compared to just coming to you on their own terms to take food from you. I'd do what Caza suggested and pop them inside an old hoody or dressing gown and sit or walk around for a while with them in there. Have you been getting them ...

Re: Rats fell in carrier

I think they will probably be OK, they'll just be shaken up. Just keep an eye on them to make sure they're acting normally.

Re: Ratrations - soya or egg biscuit?

The Rat Rations mixes contain a large variety of stuff anyway, so I don't think it's really necessary to alternate mixes to provide variety. You can add variety to their day to day diet by adding different fresh food. Egg biscuit is there as an alternative to soya - some people choose not to eat/fee...

Re: Advise for a very sick rat?

It sounds like it might be heart problems if his chest sounded clear, although I don't know what treatment would be best for that. Regarding his eyes, this might just be age if he's getting on a bit? If his eyes seem dry, the vet should be able to give you some drops which would help lubricate the e...

Re: How often and how do you offer your ratties food?

You could start off by giving them their mix in a bowl, so you can get an idea of how much they eat, then move to scatter feeding? Although weighing out their food would also give you a good guide and give you more confidence that you're not under/over feeding. I feed once a day, although I've also ...

Re: Lungworm treatment?

Yes, I've only heard of dogs catching it from slugs/snails... Sounds like she's a very unlucky girl to manage to catch it if it's less common in cats AND she's an indoor cat!

It sounds like it's going OK, I would move them to the Furet Plus and see how they do.

Re: Lungworm treatment?

I didn't know it could be transmitted by fleas, presumably this is the only way it could have been transmitted to the rats. As you would have noticed if they had fleas, I think it's pretty unlikely they have it. Just my thoughts though.

Re: Older rat feeding changes

It is probably normal that they may eat a bit less as they get older. Do you weigh them regularly? I'd suggest just keeping an eye on their weight, and if they start to lose weight you can start to supplement their normal diet with some yummy extras. Or you could try soaking a bit of their dry mix w...

Re: Introing after a loss

I'd also start straight away. But you can still get the newbies out one at a time for a bit of handling while they're being intro'd, I'd just leave them for the first day or so while they're getting used to each other.

Re: First time owner, any advice

What do you put under the finacard or do you just pop it straight in? I was going to make up some borrow boxes for them put I suppose having it covering the bottom makes sense. I'm really struggling to find breeders the list I looked at all the contact details are I reachable I put a few layers of ...

Re: First time owner, any advice

If you're going to use something like vetbed, you should offer them digging opportunities in the cage, as this is a natural behaviour for them. You can set up digging boxes containing substrate for this. Personally I use finacard in the base of the cage (around 10cm deep so they can dig and burrow i...
