Re: death during castration

I'm so sorry I lost one girl, a rescue, during a spay. Exactly the same, as the vet was putting in the last stitch her heart stopped and they couldn't revive her. The only thing I could think was that maybe she had undetected heart problems and she would have got poorly at some point from that, but ...

Re: Swell Under Jaw

River had all sorts of ABs, I think we started on Baytril but when I went back I said I thought something else was needed...we had....synulox tablets? They helped for a while but gave him a bad stomach. I even used....can't remember the name of it now but capsules I opened and put directly into the ...

Re: When is it time for the "last visit" to the vet?

I'm so sorry Steve

I usually think it's time if my rats aren't wanting food or treats and just don't seem to have that spark or enjoyment, or of course if they're struggling to do normal things like get around at all

Re: Swell Under Jaw

Its an abscess!!! Thank god.. I got phone call 2 hours later, my heart skipped thinking I had lost him under anesthetic but hes fine! Hes wondering about and I get to pick him up at 4 :). Hooray! When it was diagnosed as a tumour for River and she said "You know we're just talking about palliative ...

Re: Stretching post neuter

I remember when 2 of my girls were neutered it was awful the way they were stretching and looked so thin, like he'd taken ALL of their insides away, it was gruesome  They were the only ones I've ever seen do it though and only for a day or so after.

Re: Swell Under Jaw

I had a 22 month old boy with a lump under his jaw, just over a year ago. Vet and I both thought it was a tumour but thank god it was an abscess. It was on his sinus though and even after it cleared up the hole never fully healed and it made his jaw go wonky and he had to have his teeth burred every...

Re: Heart disease?

I've never noticed leg swelling on my past rats that have had heart problems. The frusemide will help the heart deal with fluid, but it might be worth putting him/them on Benazecare as well. I've had rats manage fairly happily for several months on this and definitely perked up after starting on it.

Re: Advice re euthanasia please

It's interesting about the oxygen. I've definitely found that with the neat iso (compared to anaesthesia for a procedure) although they don't like the smell, they aren't any more distressed than with oxygen, and they fall asleep more quickly, so overall the experience is shorter for them. Whether g...

Re: 30 month old rattie and tooth issues

My Old Man River had to have his teeth burred under a light GA every 2-3 weeks following a facial abscess which made his jaw wonky. He did take a little while to come out of it some weeks. Once or twice he was a bit weird after for a day, almost like he had some kind of dementia - he was digging in ...

Re: Advice re euthanasia please

I didn't used to be allowed but I am now at my vets. After being allowed once, following that I would say "I'm usually allowed to....." now it doesn't even get questioned, it's just taken for granted that I will want to, even with a little rescue foster girl that I'd only had 2 days. Before I was al...

Re: Hair loss - any ideas about cause?

One of my girls developed a thin patch on her back in a similar place. No other signs of mites but I treated her for that and the fur grew back in thicker. One of the rats in another cage in the room had mites and I treated him and his cage mate - she showed no signs but her very soft rexy coat had ...

Re: Breeding and birthing - what happens when things go wron

Amy thank you for sharing. What a difficult sad and awful time for you to go through and to describe. I know how much thought, how much research you put into these pairings. Breeding is not something to go into lightly, for fun etc - things can and do go wrong even when you think and re-think every ...

Re: cant send PMs

I believe that PMs sit in your outbox until the recipient reads them - it they don't read them they stay in your outbox. When they do, they go to sent items

Re: Head tilt.. will it stay?

Sometimes the tilt remains. I massaged the back of my girls neck and shoulders when she had hers (hers wasn't pronounced) and her tilt did go, but I had a rescue girl who was tilty and she never lost that. They do learn to adapt well as you've said - they can get a bit confused about which was is up...

Re: My elderly rat has a red eye...

she probably has an infection in her eye. She will definitely need antibiotic eye cream so yes you will need to take her to a vet. When my boy had one eye turn red he was put on a course of Baytril as well as the Fucithamic cream. It did clear up but without the antibiotics he would probably have lo...
