Re: URGENT: Eye problem

Go for appt but definately don't go for enuculation! Human drops can help. It sounds like a bit of trauma, eyes do heal well so give it a chance before risking an op. Just need to keep an eye on the swelling as if pressure builds up that can lead to complecations . . . timilol drops can prevent this...

Re: The age old lump removal questions...

Hey, It sounds like you're doing the right thing. Unfortunatly even if the original lump is not metastatic the levels of hormones will encourage more lumps to develop. I think lumpecotomy and spay will be our plan of action from now on. We tried the chemical spay but it didn't really work. Not tried...

Re: Rat missing front legs

This is her cage, according to the measures is for a 3 rats, what is your opinion? http://i49.tinypic.com/2mhesup.jpg I'd say the bigger the floor space the better as she won't be able to climb? Rat cages will be based on climbing so the bigger the floor plan the better for her as she won't get to ...

Re: URGENT: Eye problem

Hey, Can you describe whats wrong with the eye exactly? From the picture there is a bit of red swelling the corner of the left eye near the nasal puncta - could be a blockage / infection of this - the weeping could be normal eye fluid not draining due ot the blockage. You could try gentle massage to...

Re: Rat missing front legs

They can survive....I have seen one myself, with a very similar degree of amputation you describe, and if I remember correctly, he lived to just under 2ish. He was fine with a softened diet and soft substrate to surf through until he got used to using his back legs more and 'walking' relatively upr...

Re: Different coloured eyes?

I'd go with the 'cataract' (can't bring myself to diagnose from a picture) blocking the transmission and reflection of the light that gives the lower pigmented iris its usual red appearence - thus appearing more orange/brown (how they'd look in the dark)

Re: Three rats dead in three weeks- possible causes?

There can be a population of mites where only a few are the carriers and be down to bad luck they got bit by the wrong one. Or one tic only that was killed by a grooming rat (small enough to be destroyed by ratty teeth, unlike cats and dogs teeth which are too big?) a tic bite isn't guarenteed to gi...

Re: Different coloured eyes?

The picture doesn't look how my rat's cataract looked, but that's not to say it's not, especially as the way you've described it (white pupil) does sound like a cataract. That's probably because yours wasn't a cataract . . . corneal oedema The 'Bad' picture shows what is most likely a cataract, but...

Re: Three rats dead in three weeks- possible causes?

I wasn't so much thinking that your mum and Anthony could have come into direct contact, so much as either could have come into contact with a common factor - which could be several steps removed from both of them. That's why I asked about vets visits etc - is there anywhere outside the house they ...

Re: Corneal abrasion/scratched eye

Out of interest can you describe 'that bad'? How deep? One of ours had a traumatic injury to her eye, causing a complete hyphema where the eye was completely blood red and an abrasion which flouresced bright green under the blue filter. With a brief period of steriods to counter the bleed, followed ...

Re: Corneal abrasion/scratched eye

That seems a little extreme. Did the vet put a dye into the eye to look at the scratch on the first visit and compare it again 3 days later to see any progression? Doesn't seem a massive amount of time to let the antibiotics work, and quite a hasty decision. Were there any other factors that lead to...

Ouch, didn't realise the surgery was that complex. I'm glad she's doing well :-).

Re: Keeps opening lump removal wound.HELP!

How's this going :?: I asked about the felt pad and got told no, due to the wound being so wet and they are not sure how viable the edges of the wound is. :?: Its under her arm that keeps opening, on her "bingo wings", would a relief stitch help to keep some of the excess skin away from the site or ...
