Re: Keeps opening lump removal wound.HELP!

If it's opening up from skin tension the vet could add some 'relief' stiches to divert the tension from the opp site. Also our locum vet stitched a strong 'felt type' pad over the top of the wound to keep her from chewing it, stitched down with some strong non-absorbable sutures. It worked as a 'sac...

Re: Very confusing lumps..

It is confusing . . . Keep an eye on them obviously, if it is a tumor they can get to an easily noticable size and be removed fairly easily still. It could be 'mammary cysts' which do change with the menstural cycle in human females, as rats have a slightly more frequent 'time of the month' it could...

Re: cut

Hey, I'm glad he's eating and drinking ok. Hopefully won't be too much of an infection. Bit wierd they only took one as they were 'in there' anyway, could've asked you at least. . . I am not chastising anyone, but . . . . When it comes to cuts you've got to use a bit of common sense and be careful a...

Re: Rat epilpsy?

I was procastinating a ventricular issue . . . given age and speed of onset . . . location in realation to the VIIIth nucleus (audio) and the 'rampent electrical activity' (seziures) I'd wonder a rise in ventricular pressure/mass, which would mimic a PT at late stages given the 'link' between the II...

Re: Rat epilpsy?

What you describe is called 'wild running' and sounds like an audiogenic seziure - sounds can cause it to happen but unfortunately not always sounds we can hear to do anything about. It is suggested to be caused by a pituitary tumor, but personally i think it's more a brain stem glioma in the medull...

Re: Baytril Burns

Keep an eye out for infection, might be worth trying some flamazine cream to try and cut off any infection. It's likely the scab will eventually fall off leaving healthy tissue underneath, Try not to encourage the scab off though!

Re: Lump in a difficult place

Hey even if it is a 'lump' it shouldn't be that hard to remove (if it is of the mammary tissue) inguinal gland tissue covers a lot of the bottom area but as other mammary tissue is it quite distinct from the underlying muscle layer. We had one that was fairly large removed from there and the op site...

Re: Abscess (preputial gland?) in doe

There's lots of things an abcess can be linked to and i'm not sure that the area could link it to anything in particular, only thing i'd say is the mammary tissue there is 'deep' and lumps can hide quite easily . . . other than that can't think of much.

You could say you're budgeting for getting a few more rats and want to work out the potential cost?

Re: Gah vet fees!

I've composed an email asking them (as it's also occurred to me that this is the 3rd time Oates has been in for myco and I've been charged full price every time despite it being a recurring issue) but I'm a little nervous in case it flags me up as a cheapskate and they deliberately charge me the mo...

Re: Gah vet fees!

I don't really understand our vets pricings anymore! Did you ever? I think: The appts are 10mins for dogs and cats and 20mins for exotics. Our rats get dog/cat slots (so they're cheaper) We get one slot per animal - so if we're taking 2 they book two slots. If there are two different conditio...

Re: Different coloured eyes?

Lol ours must too. And they book us a double slot! Only charge for one though usually. Blood vessels in iris is called rubiosis, and is pretty painful. Linked with late stage diabetic retinopathy or glaucoma . . . leukocoria, or a whiter pupil can indicate a number of things, ischemia of the retina ...

Re: Different coloured eyes?

Heterochromia (different colours iris') can occur from birth but this doesn't sound like what you describe if its changed. If it's acute then I'd suggest something wasn't right. Does it seem to have changed colour due to the clear bit of the eye changing colour at all? Quite hard to say. . . could b...
