Re: What to do for the best

It sounds like what youve seen here is "flyting", this is a survival state where they move very fast in more of a bounding jump than a run. Its generally in a blind panic. Ive seen this a couple of times with rescues, and it really is a case of going very slowly with him. The important thing imo is ...

Re: HELP! Something stuck in throat?

So glad to hear she was all clear on the xray. Thats really good news :) I agree it definitely seems like a choking incident, and if it was an airway choke, then its possibly caused some aspiration / fluid into the lungs, which ofc can result in infection too so the ABs are a good step. > Rose that ...

Re: HELP! Something stuck in throat?

oh the wee soul :( That's good they've been able to get her more comfortable, she must be exhausted. Hope she is fully back on her feet today, sounds like you've all had a pretty traumatic 12 hrs. Also, if its been her windpipe, rather than throat, then keep an eye out for any resp issues as a resul...

Re: HELP! Something stuck in throat?

Normally they will fix it themselves - thats what the drooling and retching is for, to lubricate their throat and dislodge the obstruction. Its been a while now, only just saw this, how is she ? If you feel she is struggling to unblock it herself, then you may need to get her to the vet so they can ...

Re: 2 y/o buck drooling and lethargic

HI, I just read this and am glad to see he is getting better :) From what you describe it does sound like a serious choking event, likely from something getting stuck in his throat/airway. The prophyrin is likely from the stress of it - must have been quite traumatic for the wee guy, and exhausting ...

Re: Siamese boy very bitey

Sound advice :) It sounds to me like he's freezing when you stroke him and then lashing out. Positive reinforcement will help lots with this, by making every encounter with you a good memory one, so when youre able to pet him, or encourage him over to the door to see you, reward him with a wee treat...

Re: Two swollen lumps under rat's neck.

Agreed, sounds like possible tissue abscesses rather than jawbone or ZGT. If you can, I would consider getting a culture and sensitivity test done when they rupture in order to target the bacteria - especially if as Cyber Ratty says its contagious. Is fine needle aspiration possible in this location...

Re: Mystery illness and not eating

I would check his wee for any signs of kidney failure with a urine test strip, and also check for any blood in poo, just pop him in an empty carrier first thing in the morning to do this. I would also consider possible neurological issues, when he's out do you notice any lop sidedness in his walking...

That's good to hear :)
My oldie girl Jess is a constant worry to me too. Every morning I wake her for breakfast to make sure all is well, otherwise she'll just sleep and I'll worry all day !

Re: More Prominent Spine in 19 Month Old Buck

Hi, it does sound like the wee man is seeing the early effects of aging :oldbuck:  The prominent spine is in my experience quite common as their condition starts to age, as is hld. Best thing is to keep an eye on his weight, thats the best indication and shouldnt really change. But... ...Kidne...

Re: Best rat cage for 2 boys

Hi, and welcome :) The size is a perfect choice :D Ive used an explorer 1st edition for years (like 10 years !) and I still love it today. I believe the 2nd edition fixed some of the issues with the 1st, so Id think in terms of investment you cant go wrong. They are a little prone to rust over the y...

Re: Neutered buck being aggressive

Ive never seen a neutered male continue to be aggressive. Got yourself a tricky one there. Perhaps even though hes neutered he has not been challenged as alpha and so he still sees himself as the dominant rat and the youngster as an intruder. The hld boy might just be copping flak by not getting out...

Oh no, so sorry Helen :(
Its especially sad to have lost her so soon after Paws and their friend but she knew love and care and friendship and that counts for everything.

Run free and strong again Trixie with your friends at the bridge :rattyrainbow:
