Re: Rat runs - recommendations

I'll also just add that when it comes to corrugated plastic sheets, A4 Binder Spines are perfect to slide onto the edges to make them chew resistant ;)

Sticky back Velcro is also handy for making a "door" or securing the correx to a doorframe or whatever.

Fun times ahead, enjoy :)

Re: Body language during intros

I think of it as hes preparing himself for a fight by making himself look big and imposing. In fearful rats being defensive (ie rescues who have been alone a long time) Ive found they tend to retreat and rear up like a boxer to defend themselves - differently to the stare-downs you see. Sounds like ...

Re: Probable neurological symptoms in 18 month female

Oh no :( I agree it does sound neuro. It sounds like it has crept in subtlely over the last week rather than a sudden change that you would see with a stroke, so I would be looking to use steroids - in lieu of any other symptoms of infection, remember steroids have an immunosuppressant effect. Keep ...

Re: Aubiose bedding

Ack. Well I suppose any bedding is going to spread if they can kick it out of the cage.
Did you find it good in terms of dust etc ? Think it would be god in a digging box even ?

Re: Non specific symptoms in 18 month old rat

Oh good :) Thats great news, both because it avoids an awkward conversation but moreso because you have her support now with Paws ongoing treatment :) Im happy to argue it out with vets if I have to, its our rats we're arguing for after all, but its always better to have their support - it pays off ...

Re: Non specific symptoms in 18 month old rat

Ahh fab news, Ive been wondering how she was getting on today. Glad theyre having a good effect :) Thats great she feels able to get stuck into the normal food too, definitely a good sign. If it is a PT then you will want to modulate the steroid dose just to keep her at that comfort level, it doesnt...

Re: Rat struggling to eat

Sorry to read this :(
It does sound like organ failure in some fashion, and going downhill so quickly I too think you made the right choice. Even knowing what was happening I think treatment options would likely be very limited, if at all.

Re: Aubiose bedding

I got a bag of Aubiose recently when I ran out of finacard (conveniently between RR orders) but I really don't like it for the same reasons. I couldn't see any dust from it, or any settling around, but it sets my nose off too for whatever reason. It doesn't seem to have bothered the rats, but Ive be...

Re: Non specific symptoms in 18 month old rat

Ive always found they tend to split well into quarters using a scalpel, I then split the dose in two and give 12hrs apart. I find that keeps a more consistent level, but you may want to use the full dose once daily to get her started and get a feel for if its helping. Cub, the Rat Guide medication l...

Re: Non specific symptoms in 18 month old rat

Yep, and I would also add that the steroid should have an effect within 24hrs or so, and I would put it to the vet that if there is fair suspicion of a PT then it is worth using it diagnostically for that reason. And if it helps, then continue for all the reasons Cub has described. Having the broad ...
