cellulitis! Best ABs or aren't they needed

Post by Nicky » Tue Dec 15, 2015 3:21 pm

My blue boy Mercury got in a scuffle with his brother a week ago. Basically Storm might or might not have hurt Merc's finger (there was a hurt finger) and so Merc kicked off at 3 in the morning. When I check them before work (told them to behave when I went in there at stupid o'clock and the trouble had stopped by then) Storm has 3 cuts on him and Merc is going "BUT MY FINGER!!! LOOK AT MY FINGER!" Merc tends to over-react and lash out, Storm keeps out of his way for a day or two (am thinking the nad fairy may need to visit....boys are just over 12 months but Merc isn't hormonally aggressive as such, he just gets a freak on now and then).

Anyway when I cuddled him this morning it was to feel lumps in his front left leg  :o Panicked but thought it's either cellulitis, abscessing or tumours. Vet agrees that most likely is cellulitis and prescribed metacam. I asked about antibiotics (have had ABs previously for suspected cellulitis) and she's given me Septrin. None of my rats have ever liked septrin. And I hate syringing meds.

Is this the best AB for it? And if not, what is please?

thanks.

(and Merc says "Told you my finger was REALLY HURT BAD!")

Just in case anyone's interested.

Merc did manage 4-5 days of Septrin before deciding it was awful and then I got him switched onto Baytril At that point the swelling was less but there was clearly pus in the shoulder lump, muhc of which the vet managed to get out. Kept him on baytril with a view to possibly needing to gas him down and clean it up but it had reduced a lot so I opted for further ABs. Pleased to say that it's pretty much there now.

Merc said it was a VERY poorly finger!

The lumps were really concerning - I've had rats with suspected cellulitis before a couple of times over the years but nothing like this.

I saw the same vet as first time when I went back for the 3rd time. She wondered if it was time to think about manual intervention as 'he's been on antibiotics for 2 weeks now....' I nearly said "and you didn't think he needed them at all".

Must admit I hadn't heard of it before.
Officially ratless. Groot, Star-lord, Yondu adopted by another rat lover.
