Abdominal lump, lethartic but poops and appetite normal

Post by Fuzzbutt » Sun Jan 29, 2017 8:10 pm

Orson is my 9 month old intact male, and a week ago he lost all his bounce and was very slow and stopped running around like a mad thing. His poops are normal and so is his appetite, the specialist vet said she could feel a lump and said she wanted to do blood test and xray at a cost of £260. I've rung around other vets and the cheapest xray I can find is £150. I paid for him to have an ultrasound elsewhere and the girl who did it said she could see a thickening of a section of the bowel, but this info was passed onto me by a different vet, and she had not told him if it was the small or large intestine. He's been on Baytril for a week and hasn't brightened up. Vet gave me Sulphatrim to give along with the Baytril but Orson will not touch it, whatever food I hide it in, and syringing creates a wriggly, stressy mess. Should I go for an Xray to get a clearer idea of what could be wrong as I don't want to have him opened up for no reason. If it's bowl inflammation what can be done? If he needs bowel surgery is this even possible on a tiny rat? :( It's just turning into a SNAFU situation and costing me ££££ and I don't want more days to go by without taking any action. Hopefully I'll get to speak to the specialist vet tomorrow to see what she thinks the next steps could be. I should have just had the £150 xray and not faffed with the ultrasound. Such a mess :( :( :( He also seems to try to eat cardboard now, or the pellets from the litter tray, something he's not done before......I've removed it all from the cage now.

Not knowledgeable enough to offer any advice, but best of luck and scritches to Orson x

He passed away on my lap last night, I checked on him and he was on the floor of the cage breathing heavily. Snuggled him until he'd gone :*(

Oh no, how sad. Sorry he has now gone. :rattyrainbow:
Officially ratless. Groot, Star-lord, Yondu adopted by another rat lover.
