Please check and search the Health sections of our archives as there is a vast amount of information already contained within those threads. The Useful stuff announcement in that section may also help you to find the information that you need.

When seeking health advice on this forum please remember that our members have varying degrees of personal experience and understanding of rat illness and physiology. Very few of our members are qualified vets, although some do have vast experience over many years. Please bear these things in mind when assessing the quality of the replies that you receive.

Choose a post title that will clearly indicate your problem. So "weakness on left side of body" rather than "Maurice is sick" as an example.

If your situation is pressing (for example it's 9pm and your rat is listless) please mark your post *urgent*. However, please do not waste time trying to get a reply here if your rat clearly needs emergency help. Most vets now make out of hours provision, so better to contact them and get professional advice as to whether your rat needs to be seen immediately.

If you use *urgent* in your post title please remember to report the thread so that it can be removed once the situation is resolved.

Remember that whatever advice members can give you, none of us can see your rat, and if you are worried you should take your rat to a vet as soon as possible. Rats are prey animals and as such hide their illness very well. Often by the time they show symptoms the illness is already advanced. Swift diagnosis and treatment are essential.
