syringe medicating a reluctant rat

Post by Rattus » Tue Mar 07, 2017 5:14 pm

Jessie suddenly came down with a severe respiratory infection, she responded well to the initial treatment she was given yesterday, 1xCortisone 1xbaytril injection, which is a very good sign but her continuing medication is oral baytril twice daily.

In the last 36hrs I've only managed to get 5ml of diluted baby food down her 0.5ml at a time and now she has regained strength I can't get her to drink anything. I don't want to cause her additional stress but I need her to swallow the baytril and I don't think baby food or jam will cut it.

Thank you for any help

Just be firm, slip the loaded syringe into the side of her mouth and squirt the neat baytril in. If she's very good at spitting it back out again, then give her more than her dose, some of it will get swallowed.

It feels mean, but it has to be done, and you can give her the option of a tasty treat afterwards to take the taste away.

Alternatively, try mixing it with something savoury - tuna often works well.

Hummous and mashed avocado are other recommended carriers for Baytril in a reluctant rat. But if she's not eating/drinking at all then you'll need to syringe her as Mary recommended. If she's not drinking you'll also need to syringe water/other liquid into her to prevent dehydration, or inject fluids subcutaneously.
