[HELP] Rat wont leave stitches alone

Post by Ducovdd » Sat Jan 04, 2020 11:55 am

So my rat got surgery on monday and then it was all fine until the next day she bit open her wound so we went to the vet on wensday they put new staples and and on the same evening she took the staples out AGAIN then the next day on Friday we brought her back to the vet. then she got like a little sweater made out of a sock with bandage around it and she took that off to today (saturday) and now there are no options left its only a matter of time for her to bite her wound open AGAIN and im so concerned i dont know what to do anymore

Has she been on pain relief, and is she with her companions? The most likely reason for a rat to mess with an op wound is pain or boredom, so address those things first.

I would expect the wound to have at least partially healed by now, but if it hasn't, there could be infection in it.

Wounds can be managed when left open - move her into a single level cage with vetbed on the flooring (no loose substrate to get into the wound), and each day clean the wound (with saline or diluted iodine) and pack it with manuka honey.

She has been with her cage mates but she still bites them off and she isnt on pain meds but she is on antibiotics for infections (2 times a day)

I would ask the vet for some pain meds then - usually metacam or loxicom.

If you want to try bandaging again, then vetwrap (which sticks to itself) would work better than a sock, but make sure it's not too tight.

Where is the wound and what was the op for?

That's a link to the file on your computer; you can access but nobody else can. (Hopefully!) You'd need to upload it to a photo hosting site first to share it.

Actually, thinking about it, you'd be best off emailing that photo to your vets as they should know what to expect from healing, and can tell you whether or not she needs to be brought in for a followup check.

Hi heres a quick update: So we brought her to the vet on thursday and we got a skinspray that makes the making of new skinscells way quicker and the wound has gotten way smaller its about 2 cm instead of 4 and its still getting smaller really fast and i asked about the pain meds and she did get pain meds after surgery that effects for about 2 weeks

2 weeks??? What precisely did she have? I can't off the top of my head think of anything that lasts for that long in a rat; they tend to metabolise drugs extremely quickly.
