Has anyone had any experience with effectively the contraceptive implant in rats?
My vet has suggested it.
I just wanna say I've been to three vets and they are all really reluctant to spay rats unless absolutely necessary. I'm surprised!

I have no experience with it myself; I've only read about others' experiences. First thing to note is that it absolutely should not be relied on for contraception in rats; I think that's because there's no data on its reliability for this purpose. Of course, you could contribute the first data point in this area, but that's not really recommended. :P

I've heard of it being used successfully to treat hormonal aggression in both bucks and does; it seems not quite as reliable as spaying/castrating, but close enough that it's a worthwhile option, particularly for animals where actual surgery would be too risky. I've also heard of it being used to reduce the likelihood of mammary tumours, but it's less clear how well it actually works for this.

In general, I'd go for a spay as a first option, not least because the risks and effects of spaying are very well understood, whereas the implant is quite new and there's still very little data on it. It's not even certain how long it lasts in rats. I'd definitely be looking for a new vets; I'd say having a vet that can operate confidently on a rat is a fairly crucial part of owning rats. If you're in the UK and on Facebook you could ask/look in this group to see if there are recommended vets near you: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1849856665043534/

No experience with implants, but curious to know more about them.

If the vets aren’t keen on spaying, they definitely shouldn’t spay your rat (or preform any other operation on them). As cub says, a vet who is capable of preforming surgery on rats is very necessity if you have rats. They will need surgery at some point.

I've heard good things about Ashleigh so I'm a bit surprised they're so reluctant to spay tbh.

ok so she has had the implant
it was 112 gbp
and her behaviour is totally calmer, i can pick her up, she runs around all night without biting me
in fact shes not bothered about me really anymore
she used to chase me constantly
the whole mischief is happier and my double rex isnt getting bullied anymore
to say i am relieved is an understatement

Great that you see positive changes!

Did they happen to tell you more about their experience with implants and why they choose this over neutering?
