Hi I have three females, Cassie, macca &Milly. There 10,8,7weeks old. I'd like to know how you can tell when they come into season, While playing on sofa i noticed a couple of spots , there was no colour on wipe when I cleaned it. Any advice much appreciated .

I'm neither a breeder nor even an owner of females but from my understanding, females become fertile around the 8 to 12 week mark. Their "cycle" is every 4 to 5 days but they don't menstruate so "spotting" shouldn't have anything to do with estrous.

Most rats will be in season every 4 or 5 days from about 5 weeks of age, so well before being homed. They normally are in season overnight (starting from about 7pm), some will show no noticeable signs, but others may become a bit sensitive to touch, and if you gently stroke their rump, you may see them scoot away, stop still, and vibrate their ears so fast they appear to blur (very funny to see  ). Some may even become squeaky and very hard to hold when in full season!

They don't have any discharge, so if you'd seen blood drops, it could indicate a urine infection, or worse, a uterine infection - either way a vet check would be a good idea. However, since you've seen colourless drops, it'll probably just be them scent marking. :luck:
