Two brothers.. play fighting but now small wounds appearing

Post by Rat_lover16 » Wed Mar 22, 2017 8:00 pm

Its amazing... Ive owned nearly 50 rats and still find situations I am unfamiliar with

I have two brothers.... They play fight and always have since day one.

But now im finding dried scabs on one and now some blood/bites where his whiskers are.

I really hope this will pass (hormone phase) Will it?

In terms of the boys emotional state and happiness, the one receiving nips is happy, active and not bothered by the bites. He still snuggles up to his brother and eats and drinks normal (no weight loss) And also gets the upper hand sometimes and pins the other on his back.

The biting one Is also generally happy with boggling, eating etc

I really dont want to neuter as I don't like the risks involved. I am hoping is a phase like with hormonal teenage boys

Are you sure they're bites? I'm not too clear on the specifics having not dealt with this myself yet, but I've read that scabs can be due to mites or lice instead.

If they are bites, you could try re-bonding the group by going through the carrier method as though they were all being introduced for the first time: http://www.fancyratsforum.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=52

An alternative to neutering, as I understand it, is a suprelorin implant, which chemically castrates the patient. The rat would still need to be anaesthetised, but it wouldn't be as involved as actual surgery. Neutering is however very straightforward and low-risk in males, assuming the vet knows what they're doing.

I would also suspect mites - a bit of spot on treatment will help if it is. Use Ivermectin in the form of PharmaQ or Harkamectin (both sold online for birds) or a pipette of Beaphar Spot on (sold in pet shops).

Im sure they are bites.... the other brother is clear of any scabs. Around the scabs the skin is clear of any irritation (redness etc)

The shape of the wounds match the scars on my fingers from previous rats...... ears are clear too no scabbing there.

I see no excessive scratching either.

It's probably still worth trying some ivermectin though. There's no reason why the brother would be having a flare up of mites as well, it may even be that the flare up is as a result of stress brought on by the play fights.

Do they have any other companions? When rats are living just as a pair, it seems quite common for them to get on each other's nerves a bit, adding a couple of kittens could make for a happier dynamic.

Ill have a look around when I am next at a pet shop. Ive not seen many spot ons for small animals here
Can it be used while a rat is having a flare up? I can hear a flare up I think right now though he gone normal again, so Ill keep an eye on him.

Getting more rats isn't a possibility at the moment. When I finally get my own place to live then I can but not sure when that'll happen.

Wilkinsons should stock the Beaphar spot on too if that's any help.
When you say he's having a flare up at the moment, do you mean he's sniffly?

Im not in the UK, moved away just under two years ago.

I must have been mistaken or hearing things (I have tinnitus) he is fine and sleeping contently at the moment. But if he does get a flare up is a Spot on safe to use still?

I'm not sure what you mean by flare up, I was meaning a flare up of mites... but yes, it's safe to use whatever you meant. :luck:

Ok I have an update.

I just searched his fur. You have to dig or you wouldn't notice anything.

No fur loss
ALL scabs are contained to onside - left side just behind shoulder blade, couple scabs are same side on nuzzle.
He doesnt like his scabs touched =/

Rest of his skin is clear

Im thinking cut nails... and maybe the Spot On but just wanted to see if a confined area means play fighting is too much
