Which sex to choose

Post by Bertiebobbins » Sat Nov 25, 2017 9:46 am

having decided to get some rats, we're very excited in our house!

Just after some opinions as to which sex or rats will be more suitable for my daughter, who is nearly six. Obviously they will be "my" pets and she will be my little assistant, but she's been a bit miffed with the hamsters we've had as she'd hardly seen them as they got older because she's usually in bed when they come out So she is used to having a pet around, she helped out with their food/water etc and was learning to handle them with supervision, she understands the responsibility of being in charge of an animal's welfare. She's a very sensible and level headed child.

She's very excited about having rats as they are much more interactive than the hamsters. She's keen to teach them tricks and set up obstacle courses etc for them.

Everybody has their own opinions on this. Having had both I always preferred males but I may be changing my mind with this group I have, it has taken them ages to settle. On the health side females tend to have more mammary tumours, which can be removed but you have to consider the cost and recovery (spaying will help keep these at bay). On the other side there may be more likelihood having to neuter boys due to behaviour. Handling and behaviour girls are more pingy and active and boys become more laid back/lazy. Have you looked into rescuing any rats, perhaps there are some local to you that you can go and have a look and a chat.

I think the choice depends on what you're both looking for from the rats - if your daughter is keen to play alongside the rats, and do things with them rather than just wanting a pet she can cuddle (and it sounds as though she is), then I would probably recommend girls. We started with girls when my kids were 5 and 7.

However, it very much depends on what the specific rats you'll be getting are like, some boys can be more lively than some girls. If you're getting them from a good breeder, then you should be able to meet some adults from the line to see how they will turn out. If you opt for adult rescues, you'll know what they are like (or at least the rescue can describe their natures to you), but obviously kittens would be a bit of a gamble.
