taming 2,5 month old rats, how much can they trust you at this age

Post by Jydow » Wed Apr 17, 2019 9:06 am

Hello fellow rat parents,

I have 3 rats born on the first of februari. I got them at 6 weeks old from a breeder. They do trust me quit well but i get the feeling maybe im doing something wrong.

They immediatly ate from my hand and I got them a bit accustomed to being picked up by giving food picking up while eating and rewarding. Now 2 of them don't really mind that much the third is more skittish, but accepts it.

I try to free range them in a play area every night for 1 or 2 hours. And they like it they run around and jump eachother etc. They do come to me when i sit in this area, but never stay long.
Other times I put them on my lap when i sit in a chair, the shy one and on other do try to relax sometimes. the third is just hyper  and they do eat. But outside protection of a blanket or hoodie they dont trust it very well.

Does anyone have tips how to get them more used to being with me? Or wil this just come with age?
maybe have them on my lap more often?

It sounds like you're doing pretty well socialising them, honestly. If they'll take food from your hand, let you pick them up (however reluctantly), and let you handle them enough to do health checks, that's most of the way there. The rest is down to developing a relationship with them, which takes time, and also down to their personality, which is out of your control. Young rats are usually much more interested in playing and exploring than sitting around having cuddles, even with someone they trust, and most rats will retain this tendency as they age.

If you find they're wary of you in particular, you can try some more focused bonding sessions with each rat individually. Put on a dressing gown or a big jumper and put them inside, and keep them there for 20 minutes or so. This is best done in a different room to the room their cage is in, since they'll be in a slightly different environment, and you'll be the most familiar-smelling thing nearby.
Poo-shoveller to: Calyn, Din, Zephyr Donovan (Phoenix), and Zephyr Mick Jagger (Edgeworth).
Fondly remembering: Xeltan the wonky, Lita (NLA32), Lia (NLA28), Zephyr Delanynder (NLA28), Falere (NLA36), Mirala (NLA36), Zephyr Opold, and Rila.
