food enrichment

Post by oowie » Wed Jul 01, 2020 10:42 am

I scatter my rats food in the substrate, but i am looking for other homemade enrichment ideas.
what are good things to hide food in and let them work for it a bit? i like things they can destroy and things that can be hung in the cafe with food in it.
any good ideas for homemade enrichment toys ?

Save your empty toilet roll tubes, small cardboard boxes, egg cartons, etc. (Assuming your egg cartons are made of cardboard.) You can fold over the ends of toilet roll tubes to make a sealed box to contain food, hang it up with string, or put it inside a larger cardboard box. I've done 3-layered food-in-boxes for my most motivated rats before. You can also stuff the boxes with newspaper or other material to make it harder to get the food out.
