Powder coating

Post by Onthewires » Mon Aug 14, 2017 11:50 am

Hi all,

I've just bought myself a vintage parrot cage and its massively rusted/in general bad nick. The cage part is essentially naked metal so I'd definitely have to paint it with something to prevent rust in the future, and the base will need to be stripped off and repainted as well because the paint is flaking off. I'm very confused about what paint would be safe to use should I decide to tackle it myself, and don't really trust myself to do it right, so was thinking of taking it to a specialist to powder coat it so it's essentially like a new shop bought cage. Has anyone ever done this before? Or if not, what are people's thoughts?

I have painted metal cages before but cannot remember what I used. I'm sure it was just a metal paint but not 100% sure.

I've a feeling that powder coating will hold smells (like the old Jennys?), but when I've painted cages I've used hammerite straight to rust, or japlac.

Thanks for the replies. Did you find that the hammerite stayed on the cage well? My main concern is it flaking off and them ingesting it, and also having to reapply it if it comes off through general wear and tear. Did the finish look okay? I'm very paranoid that it will end up looking silly due to my poor painting skills

I think I'll contact the powder coating company and ask if they've done cages before anyway, just because I'd feel more inclined to give it to someone to do it professionally, as it's something that I'll probably end up keeping even if not for the rats.
