Washing fleece! What do you use?

Post by RattieMummaSharna » Tue Aug 29, 2017 2:50 pm

Hi all!
Just a quick question about how or what you use yo clean your fleece liners.
Obviously I want to use the safest products and I've been using fairy non-bio washing gel.
I can't seem to see any guidelines anywhere- so not sure if I'm being over the top?
Do you have a special washing detergent? Should non-bio gel be okay?

I guess it's helpful to note that I do not use fabric conditioner in my fleece washes.

Thanks!

I don't use fleece liners as I don't have flat shelves in my cages, and I like my rats to have a deep layer of loose substrate for them to forage in, burrow in, and nest with.

However, I do use fleece hammocks, and I just wash those with my normal detergent.

Same here. Actual loose substrate is much more absorbent so smells a lot less and also provides enrichment. For the hammocks, I just wash with the same stuff I wash my own clothes with: bog standard supermarket bio washing powder. I figure if it's fine for washing human (including babies' and children's) clothes then it's fine for rats. Babies and toddlers are assumed to chew on anything they can get their hands on after all.

Thanks for your responses!

As two of my boys have had respiratory problems I opted for fleece for their home. However I have provided them with a 'dig box's for burrowing and foraging which they love!

A good substrate won't exacerbate any respiratory issues - something like finacard (shredded cardboard) or pureflake extra (kiln dried dust extracted soft large shavings) is best. Then you'll be able to scatter feed them, which is another very good enrichment activity and a healthy way of eating. :luck:
