Making things easier for my old boy

Post by Firecat » Mon Oct 30, 2017 8:19 pm

Hi all

My eldest rat is not doing so well. He now struggles to get up to the hammock and is generally unsteady and doddery. I’ve made sure there is water at floor level and the food is always there, but I’m concerned as he can’t reach the nest where his cage mates gather he will be in danger of getting cold. I’ve put fleece in before and they either destroy it or won’t go in it, any suggestions (on this topic and generally re older rats)?

The ropes are as gentle sloped as I can make them, he seems intent on trying to take odd routes and then falls off.

Update:

At floor time he went and stood under the radiator and sort of nested down on a towel, so I have moved the hammock right to the floor of the tank and he was climbed in. Hopefully the others will now sit with him and keep him warm and I assume he is trying to stay snug.

Our older rats have always liked a cardboard box that I have taped shut with a rat size hole cut in the side (cereal box or whatever you have. A shoebox would work). Put it in the bottom of the cage with shredded paper, or towelling material etc. It is nice and dark and cosy. The others can then join him if they want.

I provide a rody igloo (essentially the same as a box with a hole in) for my groups when there are oldies who can no longer climb so easily, and generally someone will be in there with them.
