I've got a zooplus Barney sitting empty (previously used for a hamster). Dimensions are 100 x 54 x 45. I'm wanting to get a pair of baby rats, they will be a few weeks old (six I think). Just wondering if the Barney would do for them for a few weeks until I can get them a bigger, permanent home? Would be their home until January at the latest.
Many thanks

I think that will be ok. I have kept 4 rats in a mamble, which is 100x54x64. Just a thought, if you are getting a pair of rats, adding another to the group is a good idea, although you will have three rats the same age, as they get older it will save you being in a ‘lone rat’ situation and three rats are a better dynamic than two. If that fits with you of course.
Officially ratless. Groot, Star-lord, Yondu adopted by another rat lover.
To all those who have filled my heart, have fun at the bridge.

Thanks. I think I'll stick to 2 for now so we can get used to having rats, but once I've got their big cage sorted (planning on getting something huuuuuge!) I'll think about adding another, younger rat or two a few months down the line so I've got two generations going.

When adding rats, always add two so they have same age company. If you are not adding another pair in less than 6 months time, then I agree that you should get three to start with - they will definitely benefit from the more varied interactions, and it'll be more fun for you. Plus, if you want 1:1 time with a rat then you're not having to leave one on its own back in the cage.
