Conjunctivitis - gel won't stay in rats eye

Post by Ratmanu » Wed Apr 18, 2018 8:52 pm

Hi, I have a rat which has conjunctivitis, this is the first time she has had this and the vet has given me gel for it but I am really struggling to get her to stay still, and even when she does, the gel seems to go into her eye but just bounces straight back off? Or she uses her paw to move it away? Has anyone had a similar problem? I'd be really grateful for any advice.

Not had this problem. Does it not come in liquid form, I have had drops before that have been easier to put in?
Officially ratless. Groot, Star-lord, Yondu adopted by another rat lover.

I recommend making a rat baguette! Using a towel (not fleece as it stretches), sit her on it and wrap it around her so that it fits snugly round her neck to prevent arms slipping out, and then continue to wrap quite tightly to prevent wriggling. Once constrained like this, you should be able to open her eye with one hand, and apply the gel with the other. (I don't have any pictures, but will take one later - whatever you do don't try googling for examples!)

Alternatively, recruit someone else to hold her.
