Good rat cage?

Post by seasalt » Fri Aug 23, 2019 8:16 pm

I was looking at some rat cages online, and found this one - ... ay&sr=8-14.
Do you think it's a good cage for two rats, or is there another one you feel would be better?

I'd say it's a decent cage, but the access is poor, you'd need to add a base tray yourself to allow for substrate, and it's also not as big as it appears since the stated dimensions include the height of the stand, which obviously the rats can't use. I'd say if you can get one cheaply secondhand and don't mind making aftermarket modifications, go for it. But I wouldn't want to pay full price for it; you can do better.

If you're on a budget, the Coco Large is a good size, flatpacks, and cheap (and I believe you can get a further 10% discount on that site with code FANCYRATS): ... 0x70x54cm/

If you have the space and funds, though, I'd advise going straight for the Little Zoo Venturer. The access is great, it's the only cage in its size class that doesn't require you to sort out your own base tray, it's all metal so chew-proof, and the narrow bar spacing is suitable for other species too. It's the cage I'd buy if I was buying now, despite the colour. :P ... ammal-cage

(Although if you are on a budget, do also consider whether you can afford the vet bills. Rats are decidedly not cheap.)
