My mix mutated over the last 18 months...

Post by Buzzwizz619 » Sun May 28, 2017 11:41 pm

...ive been making my own mix now for the last 18 months, when i started i followed a strict plan but when i discovered the wonderful world of rat rations and all the seeds and grains and things they do and now im not even sure if im remotely close to the forumla because i get so confused what counts as grains, processed grains and seeds!

My current mix is:-
Bananna brunch - 64%
Brown rice - 2%
Burns cat kibble - 2%
popped corn - 2%
Maize flakes - 2.5%
whole wheat - 1.5%
rice puff - 4%
Rye flakes - 4%
Dari - 2%
Buckwheat Puffs - 1.5%
Spelt Puffs - 1.5%
Wheat flakes - 4%
Puffed Millet - 2%
Denes mixer - 1.5%
Pigeon mix - 2.5%
Locus Beans - 1%
oats - 4%
Canary mix - 1.5%
hemp - 1%
Safflower - 1%
condition cubes - 2%
wheat bix - 2%
Peckish 1 in 5 bird seed - 3%

Am i still on track or has my mix mutated too much and is doing more harm than good?

Thanks Amy

First of all, there's nothing intrinsically wrong with deviating from the Shunamite guidelines, assuming that's what you mean. My homemade mix doesn't follow the Shunamite "formula", and I know various other people do likewise. It's just that the Shunamite guidelines provide an easy-to-follow framework for making a good mix, that's all; there are many other ways to achieve an equally good end result.

Your mix mostly looks fine to me, with plenty of variety, but the percentage of cat kibble looks like it's rather too low. I'm not an expert on volume-based mixes (assuming that's what your percentages are of), but at a guess I'd raise the cat kibble to 5% at least. Maybe reduce the amount of Banana Brunch to compensate.
