Rat Rations which mix?

Post by NewbieRatOwner » Fri Dec 28, 2018 2:22 pm

Hi

Would appreciate some advice on the best mix to get from rat rations and what else I’d need to add to it?

Fresh food is given daily (mix of green leafy veg)

Reading through the options but got a bit overwhelmed! Two male rats around 6/7 months old, thank you!

RR mixes are simpler than they seem :)

I would recommend any of the #11 (see 'complete mixes') - then you just choose egg or soya (probably down to ethical concerns about how soya is produced), and garlic or not (whether you like or dislike the minimal smell).

Your rats are adults, so won't need any additional protein unless you see them going through a growth spurt (they may start to look more lanky, and their tails may develop a slightly square edge) in which case they may benefit from a fresh meal as well once a week (e.g. rice and chicken, or cous cous and tuna).

Because the RR mixes are based on natural grains, you will need to give some supplements (either daily rat 3 on wet food/veg, or calcivet and Dr. Squiggles in a separate water bottle) several times a week. If you choose an isamix, then give supplements once or twice, otherwise give them two or three times.

Just as an additional note, don't give them green leafy veg every single day: a lot of them are high in oxalates which, whilst fine in moderation, aren't great in excess. As with most things, you can have too much of a good thing, moderation is important, and so is variety. (You can however give them veg every day, just mix it up with some other stuff too.)
Poo-shoveller to: Calyn and Din.
Fondly remembering: Xeltan the wonky, Lita (NLA32), Lia (NLA28), Zephyr Delanynder (NLA28), Falere (NLA36), Mirala (NLA36), Zephyr Opold, and Rila.

If you want to feed greens every day just select those that have much lower levels of oxalate (basically an anti nutrient which in excess depletes mineral absorption in the gut and can also lead to crystal formation in the kidneys). Kale and dandelion leaves are both fine in this regard and are magnificent in terms of a dietary source of calcium.
