Other pet food for rats

Post by Feolthanos » Sun Dec 29, 2019 9:31 am

In addition to my near future rats I have a dog and terrapins. I was wondering if anyone knew if the food I feed them would be suitable for the rats as treats?

I know that rats shouldn't have too high a protein diet, so this is mostly just for that extra protein they need as youngsters, rare treats to mix it up and not as a main staple.

The dog mostly gets store brought raw dried and cooked meat treats (she rarely has anything with the word 'derivative'!) but there's still usually some ingredient or other that I'm not sure about. The terrapins have a mixed complete food in addition to their fresh with krill, shrimp and insect bits I can indentify and pick out. BUT is there anything I'm not aware of that would make these kind of treats unsuitable for rats?

Also, I've heard that rats like chewing on cattle ears, is this true? I'm sure the dog wouldn't notice if I cut a bit of hers for them

I can't imagine that anything a dog or terrapin could eat would be harmful to a rat, at least not in small quantities as a treat or dietary topup. I'm sure the dog chew would be fine too.

I don’t know how good rats are with bacteria and parasites, since they are not carnivores. I personally feed them vegan, but if I would give them something from my cat I would feel safer giving them some of his dried snacks rather than his raw food.

Ah sorry I meant raw as in dried jerky style strips rather than cooked meat treats. My dog is fed raw meat and I wouldn't give the rats that food either for safety :)
