Suitable Mix Ingredients?

Post by Moomuffin » Wed Mar 25, 2020 12:57 pm

Just wondering if any of the following are suitable to use as part of a mix?

Pah guinea pig muesli
https://www.petsathome.com/shop/en/pets ... hy-hay-2kg

Gertie Guinea Pig muesli
https://www.petsathome.com/shop/en/pets ... uesli-25kg

Would either of those work mixed with Pah rat muesli?

Vita Nature Cockatiel
https://www.petsathome.com/shop/en/pets ... nner--750g

Wheat Free birdseed mix
https://www.petsathome.com/shop/en/pets ... d-food-2kg

Any of the Vitakraft fruitti cocktails?

Or any of the bird/parrot food mixes? No point in linking as nutrition analysis/ingredients not listed online

I’m fairly sure most *should* be ok used as part of a mix and diluted. Just wanted to double check :)

It's more normal to use a rabbit food as a base, and since rabbits and guinea pigs have very different dietary needs I wouldn't use the guinea pig mixes. The bird ones look okay, but you'd also need to add in lots of dried veg.

I'd recommend this one https://www.amazon.co.uk/Extra-Select-P ... 992&sr=8-6 as a base and then follow the shunamite diet recipe.

Thankyou Mary

I know there’s a fair few other ingredients needed was just wondering about those particular ones based on what I can get locally.

Still looking around for other components. Have spent a ridiculous amount of time on rat rations website

To be honest I’m leaning towards Rat Rations. It just might be easier to order everything from one place and then means I can actually get what I want instead of looking for alternatives

Rather than make yet another thread 🙈
Could you tell me if any of the seed/bird/bean mixes from Junglegold are of any use? I’d really like to give a diverse mix as possible without buying too many ingredients. Sounds stupid but I’d rather not buy the pre-made complete mixes as I get so much pleasure out of making mixes myself. One of my favourite things when I had rats previously.

Also found a lot of possible ingredients on Scarletts parrot
Essentials. Mostly the Tidymix range of seeds. Would any of those be suitable as a good seed mix?

https://www.scarlettsparrotessentials.c ... arrot-seed

Or they do a range here including lots of bits that look useful like the mixed puffs and a few others

https://www.scarlettsparrotessentials.c ... rot-treats

Any recommendations of what would be suitable from those?

The problem with parrot mixes is they are high in fruit which means they'll be too sugary for rats, but the milk thistle, beetroot, carrot, puffs, and possibly garlic sticks would be nice.

Jungle Gold is Rat Rations. ;) The seed mix that RR sells is a good one.

If you're mixing your own, look for hemp seed - I have a local shop that sells it loose which is very handy.

Thanks for clarifying Mary :)
Its a shame they aren't nutritionally appropriate for rats as a lot of them look lovely, but not a problem I shall avoid.

I'm currently looking into making an Isa-mix type mix as means I get to play around with the ingredients a bit more but going to start out fairly basic with whats recommened in jemma fettes recipe until i'm more confident with it.
