THE current Shunamite Diet ( ):

Rat Rations number seven complete mix with added Dene's wholegrain mixer, large leaf dried dandelion, large leaf coneflower (echinacea), a few small nuts in their shells (the big pine nut type things), a tiny bit of both coconut shavings and dried cranberries.

I usually use number seven as it's a kidney friendly mix useful throughout life beyond the first few weeks. Mums and babies get different mix, as to groups with rats who are male and very old in them, I just don't have any of them at the moment, as my oldest male is currently about 22 months.

The extras I add do vary - but there are always bunny herbs, and the Dene's I am just trialling, but it will probably become a fixture.

My current dry mix is slightly different to the norm as I'd run out of a few ingredients when I made it up, but didn't want to buy new before moving house.

Previously I've had a very limited amount of processed grains in my main mix, with flakes and puffs being given to those who needed it as part of a seperate soakable mix for oldies/ ill rats. But now with increased numbers of rats and being able to buy some straights locally it's making more financial/ time-keeping sense to include more flakes in the main diet again. So next time I make up a new batch of dry food I'll be using the mixed MMF flakes as a base rather than whole grain equivalents.

But to encompass the above variation and planned changes (so I don't keep needing to post as it changes towards the ideal!) my main dry mix is something like (scoops):

Grains
Barley, whole (2)
Barley, flaked (2)
Maize, whole (2)
Maize, flakes (3)

Will mostly change to:
MMF mixed flakes [barley, maize, split peas] (5+)

Also
Rice, paddy (1)
Rice, white/ brown (2)
Spelt, puffs (1)
Millet, whole and mixed (1)
Millet, puffs (2)
Red dari (1)
Buckwheat (1)
Hemp (1)

Seed mix (1) mixed seperately and typically made up of:
- Linseed (1)
- Safflower (2)
- Black/ red rape (½)
- Coarse wild meadow seeds (½)

Extras/ for interest/ other - amounts and specifics vary
Fish4Dogs Working Dog Complete kibble (2) - although I'm looking to remove this too
Lentils
Excel Mountain Meadow herbs or equiv.
Dried echinacea
Dried veggies - always mushroom, also typically beetroot, leek, carrot, onion, swede, tomato
Kelp pieces
Garlic pieces
Nuts in shells - various; one each given weekly rather than mixed in

NB: I have a mixed aged group of 8 does; ranging from 26 months (and a bit wobbly) down to 3.5 months.

RR no.7 mix with extra barley flakes, pea flakes, Denes wholegrain mixer, squished maize, rice flakes, brown rice, mixed puffs, cranberries, dried dandelion, soup mix (barley and mixed lentils I think), dried veggies, mixed seeds, mixed millet, chamomile flowers, dried seaweed, and dari. Yum!

I make up my mixes seasonally, so for the Autumn:-

Buckwheat cereal biscuits, home-made
Spelt pasta/kibble with supplements added, home-made
naked barley
naked spelt
jumbo rolled oats
pumpkin seed
hempseed
quinoa
sprouted,dried chick peas
flaxseed
milk thistle seed
chopped almonds
sliced coconut
gojiberries
bilberries
hibiscus
dried mushrooms
dried nori
currants
rowan berries, wild
seaweed, can't remember which kind but OH foraged it!
few raisins
dried nettle

Mostly organic as well! I usually do a herb mix separately and just scatter that around now and again.

That's about it for now but going to add some dried veggies when i get round to drying them. :)

In my mix at the moment are Harrisons banana brunch, JWB ocean fish dog food, mini weetabix, bran flakes, cornflakes, rice cakes, pumpkin seed ryvita, Denes wholegrain mixer, tricolour pasta, broth mix, parrot seed, mixed dried herbs from RR and dried garlic peices. They always have the same rabbit base and dog food, although I do alternate the dog food flavour. The cereals etc change from mix to mix.

Rice, paddy (1)
Rice, brown (1)
