What kind of coat does my rat have?

Post by Squirrel » Tue Jan 05, 2016 6:30 pm

We've got an adult rat with incredibly soft fur like a kitten's. I wondered what coat type she could have. She's definitely an adult at 15 months and was 8 months when we got her. The difference is noticeable to her cage-mate who has the same coat type as all my other female rats have had (I've only ever had one rex and he was a buck).

I wouldn't describe Marshmallow's fur as satin or velvet. It's just very soft and fluffy. As I say, kitten-like is the best way to describe it. I don't think you could tell from a pic hence I'm not posting one. She's a dumbo red-eyed himmy if that's any help.

Thanks.

I am not sure if their is a coat type for "soft fur" but one of our bucks Taz has, what I call, girly fur as his is very soft and silky.

There could be one that has just not been officially recognised or bred for yet.

(I assume Taz isn't neutered as that makes bucks have fur more like a doe's).

Does she have straight whiskers?
Could be a combination of fur types tbh, or could just be her, not necessarily a separate gene responsible.

I have a doe with a velvet coat - it feels just as soft to stroke going from tail towards head as it does the normal way.
